There are at least three groups that go by the name of Phantom Limb.

1. Phantom Limb are a country/soul band from Bristol, UK. Combining country harmonies with gospel and soul, the band are a captivating live act with one of the best vocalists in the country in Yolanda (who also sings live with Massive Attack). Their self titled debut album was released in summer 2008 after playing SXSW and Glastonbury festivals. The Phantom Limb sound is an indefinable blend of classic southern soul and country blues. They blend modern songwriting and rich acoustic music with powerful gospel-inflected vocals. Already comparisons are being made to Mavis Staples, Aretha Franklin and The Band. Their honest, melancholic, Bristolian edge creates one of the most original and compelling new propositions of recent years. The self-titled debut album was the brainchild of Robot Club production team, whose recent writing/production credits also include Will Young, Skin (Skunk Anansie) and Fortune Drive. The album was recorded at their very own Robot Club Studios (Bristol) as well as Rockfields Studio (Monmouth) and Caveman Studios (Bristol). On 13th of February 2012, they issued a new album, The Pines, on a Naim label.
Yolanda Quartey - lead vocals
Stew Jackson - guitar, pedal steel, banjo, vocals
Dan Brown - bass, guitar, vocals
Matthew Jones - drums, vocals
Dan Moore - piano, hammond, vocals

There was also another band named Phantom Limb that is not listed here, that were from Oostende, Belgium although sometimes mistaken for a Dutch band as the record was released on Sublabel, a sublabel of Torso Records. 5 tracks of excellent cold wave typical of the era, of which 'Numbered Hills' is an instrumental. Hard to find or quite expensive but once in a while there pops up a copy over here for a decent price. As far as I know there were only 2 releases on Sublabel, this one and the Neon 'A Day In The Land Of Lost Horizons' 12". I wish Last FM would be able to differenciate the two bands apart. :/

An absolutely outstanding band, their Live in Bristol album is also a stonker of an album (that means good!). Brilliant live and a nicer bunch you couldn't wish to meet. The Pines is one of the best albums of 2012 :)
