United States (2009 – present)

Petrychor is an atmospheric black metal project from USA, formed in 2009, and containing elements of folk, world, classical and noise music. A debut EP, Dryad, was released unceremoniously in February of 2010 and quickly gained a following on the internet through numerous reviews, filesharing, and radio play. In May of 2011, a full-length album, Effigies and Epitaphs, was released digitally with a physical release on Khrysanthoney soon to follow. The 2CD set contains both releases in double-sided packaging.

In 2013, a split with Frozen Ocean entitled Autumn Bridges was released on Wolfsgrimm Records. The full-length album Makrokosmos followed in 2014.

Petrychor has a Bandcamp site at Effigies and Epitaphs is a name-your-price download, and the other releases are each available for a small price.

Petrychor is a solo project of Tad Piecka, the bass player of Beware of Safety. He has also released music as Tremolite and Carbonscape.

Solid new album. I'll be returning to this quite a bit, no doubt.

New Petrychor? That came out very under the radar, I struggled to find any announcement of it even being released. The sad news with Khrysanthoney probably didn't help...

heh yeah sorry about that. Timeliness is everything I guess. The Clouds Collide split was released independently, so I guess anything might happen with Petrychor's album. He could dump it on us tomorrow or hold out for someone like Profound Lore to grab it. Who knows.

For what it's worth, when I made that shout, the shuttering of Khrysanthoney had been announced; Wilhelm's death hadn't. Just so you don't all think I'm as tactless as that shout might otherwise make me look in retrospect.

I suppose if control of the label isn't handed over to someone willing to continue it, the bands will have to pick up the pieces themselves. In terms of Petrychor, I'm sure Tad can get his album released through another label. But I think it's too soon to start thinking about things like that, just yet.

So, if Khrysanthoney is no more, what's happening to the new album? :(

Lotsa any idea when it's coming out? I want to hear what Tad does with those "dubstep" influences. I'm sure he can pull it off, but I'm still curious.

""Makrokosmos" is comin' soon." Six months later, I'm assuming "soon" is totally relative :3

""Makrokosmos" is comin' soon." I'd say shut up and take my money, but sadly, I lack money. One of these days you'll get it though. :p

"Quite good, but needs better instrument separation...<--- That mash of instruments you hear was what the artist intended, actually.

Hmm sounds like a LoFi version of Eikenskaden. Quite good, but needs better instrument separation...

"It's kind of depressing how little exposure this release got." <----- As it is with the lack of response to "Effigies And Epitaphs" too, but Petrychor is a sickeningly underrated band in general, sadly, it seems. Any way, the Petrychor side of this split is gorgeous. What I'm hearing from Frozen Ocean isn't too shabby either, but I'm only like 2 min into their first track, so...nice album art by the way.

My copy of the split came in. It's pretty great. It's kind of depressing how little exposure this release got. I wonder if Tad is going to release more material for this project soon. It's been two years since the full-length and one thirteen-minute song isn't that much material. Granted, he's put out five Carbonscape releases in the last two years, so it's not like he hasn't been doing anything.
