    this song's most significant achievement - not in terms of its poetry or music, per se, but as far as sentiment goes - is that it refuses to be political at the expense of being impersonal.

    yes, it's inspired by a thin beam of light, surrounded by the darkness, hate, and anger that have defined u.s. foreign policy for some time.

    but it's also about me, and about my own capacity to forgive those who hurt me.

    katz doesn't let me point the finger. he reminds me that forgiveness is "all that we've got left."
