La Chaise Dieu, France (2000 – present)

Peste Noire is a black metal band from La Chaise Dieu, France, formed by La sale Famine de Valfunde in 2000 with the help of Neige (Alcest) on drums. According to its leader, the band plays “Gothic, Fantastique, grotesque, archaeofuturist black metal”. In 2011, Famine created his own label and studio, La mesnie Herlequin, in order to have complete control over the production, recording and distribution of Peste Noire’s music. The band is sometimes referred to as P.N. or K.P.N (« Kommando Peste Noire »)

Peste Noire was created by La sale Famine de Valfunde (i.e. “The filthy Famine of Valfunde”) in 2000, initially under the name Dor Daedeloth. He was quickly joined on drums by Neige who played in the band for the next eight years. Together they released four demos and one split demo tape in the band’s first five years of existence. Argoth, a session bass player also member of early Alcest fame, also helped up to the 2002 “Mémoire Païenne” split. Famine (then known as Aegnor/Feu Cruel) would also be the lead guitarist on Alcest’s first demo tape “Tristesse Hivernale” released on 2001 through Drakkar Productions in which Famine wrote the main riff of the song “La forêt de Cristal”.

In 2006, Famine hired new members Winterhalter (drums) and Indria (bass) to play on Peste Noire’s first studio album, and to expand Famine’s music. They completed what Famine began to call “Kommando Peste Noire”. At the time, Famine had fired Neige from the band and P.N.

@unmarkable, True. I could do that =o. Although I gotta save up since I'm recently broke and since I graduated, job hunting has been difficult -_-. And I know >.<. I tried to buy Niklas's 'When Prozac No Longer Works', and while the book was at a decent pricing, shipping made things complicated.

shipping was about 15 euros. shipping is never cheap from france to the us. you could always order the social parasite version of the self titled and save 22 euros :)

@Unmarkable, so far, I've listened to the first album, and I love it, it's a pretty impressive album, and basically represents what Peste Noire is. I'm gonna actually listen to Folkfuck Folie later on, and the albums later. on, And seriously, $105 bucks in total O_O? How much was shipping for the self titled digibook?

i bought the self titled digibook and the Les Demos cd comp a month or so ago, both 30 euros each, and with shipping to the US it came out to about $105 usd. it is a little pricey for ultimately 3 cds, but i'd do it again in a heatbeat. the self titled is a really great release, and their demos are practically classic status at this point. As far as what to listen to by them AnarchyBrony, you really just need to listen to everything they've released. they all have something special about them.

Oh I did hear his store is under maintenance and something about paypal, and really o.o? That's around 40 US dollars. of course with shipping as well..but wow o.o. It's not that much! It's weird because usually a band who makes a limited edition like that will make it like 60 or higher *coughStevenWilsonandPorcupineTree*.

@AnarchyBrony I can't remember how much I paid, around 30 euros maybe? Wasn't that much either way. I bought it from La Mesnie Herlequin, Famine's store which is currently under mainentance.

How much is the PN-Digibook? I've heard it's pretty expensive (Especially on Discog, where it's around 90 bucks).

@moreaupat, Alright then!I think the artwork of Folkfuck Folie is what caught my attention, What the hell IS THAT THING ANYWAY X'D!Also BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I've been growing to like Shining too, although, am I the only one who's scared of Niklas Kvarforth?

my favourite tracks on Folkfuck Folie are the two last ones, Paysage Mauvais and Folkfuck Folie (the second half of this song is beautiful), so if you try it go till the end ! According to his facebook it loooks like we wont see him with Shining on stage at the Hellfest. He blames the jews, ahah

@It pretty much is. Judging from 'J’avais rêvé du Nord', the band took a rather different approach (as eminent with Audrey now being part of the band). From what I've heard, Folkfuck Folie is sort of a black sheep album, but judging from what you've told me, I'll think about giving it a chance. And I see, I did note he only played demos and such (plus I think he's decision to go to a more post-metal direction didn't seem to fit for La sale). Also, nice Autumn Aurora picture.

@AnarchyBrony, L'Ordure à l'état Pur took me a while to get into since it's... well different. But nowadays I wonder if it isn't my favorite PN album. Folkfuck Folie also took me a while to get into but it's a really good album and it more than deserves a 2nd chance if you don't like it at first. In my opinion it's fairly similar to La Sanie except generally higher temp and shorter songs. Neige wasn't ever really a big part of PN. He played drums on a couple of demos, did guest vocals on like 2 songs and wrote 1 song (La Césarienne).

@TeJech, @Moreaupat, thanks!I also had @silentbodom91 recommend me 'La Sanie..." as well, since many people say it's their best work. @TeJech, how come? I did read that La sale put some of the ideas he had for his 'Valfunde' project (which never went through for some reason), so was that a reason? @Moreaupat, What about L'Ordure à l'état Pur? I tried listening to the 20 minute song of 'J’avais rêvé du Nord' and it just didn't click for me. @Needmonoise and Current666, So Neige was just in Peste Noire for show and then he was kicked out?
