This band does not really appeal to me, and nor does it really try to, but I found The Scourge to be the best song Periphery has to offer for me. Less wankery, less djenty and it is trying to be a bit more progressive. If The Scourge is the type of songs we could expect from Juggernaut, then I will probably end up liking Periphery a lot more.

new tracks are alright.... I hope the album has some of Misha's old soundclick ideas, like Press Enter or Inertia! those tracks are way too good.

I haven't heard "The Bad Thing" yet, but I've come to love "The Scourge". I don't know about the rest of you, but it gets better with every listen. I can't get enough of it now. I'm very optimistic about the band's current direction. I hope that Juggernaut will be the best the band has offered to date. I'm just eager to know more about the packaging. Will I need to buy two separate CDs, or will Periphery sell both Alpha and Omega together?

"because you know, double concept albums and 12 minute long songs is pandering to teenage girls" yeah, that's more or less my point, plus the fact that neither of the two new songs have absolutely anything resembling a verse-chorus structure, both sound like one part of something larger.

  • Ondskapet

At least that's my thoughts on the matter, I could be wrong and Periphery could actually be pandering to teenage girls and sponce could also be channeling Katy Perry.

What I see is a trend in wanting a reason for the band being popular other than quality of the music or just pure coincidence or luck. It's easy to just point fingers at a metal band and shout "sell out" and "they're pop now" (Because pop music is dangerous and spooky for my hardcore ears of metal steel). I even read a message from a guy claiming that the band is pandering to teenage girls, because you know, double concept albums and 12 minute long songs is pandering to teenage girls. The new record seems to be going the way of the contortionist and tesseract with even more focus on groove and melody than blazing speed and crazy riffing. Spencer's vocals are literally the same style as before, only a bit more refined, you're just cognitively applying the association of their popularity with the fact that you're not crazy about the new songs.

I still have no idea where you're coming from, though... How does Clear (or especially The Scourge which is mostly pretty damn dark) have poppier vocals than before? Off the top of my head, Jetpacks, Light, Facepalm Mute and above all Scarlet (plus probably a bunch of other songs but it's 4:10 AM) have much poppier vocals than anything on Clear not to mention The Scourge. And catchiness or poppiness or however you call it has never been an issue for me because I've always found them so ridiculously addictive because they manage to sound melodic and accessible despite their music being very complex (arrangement-wise and technicality-wise), making it both easy to get into but also not getting boring after 5 or 10 listens. And both The Scourge and The Bad Thing seem to be a general "fuck you" to usual verse-chorus song structures and overall sound like the least poppy thing I've heard them release with less catchy melodies and more gloomy riffs with ambience.

"The only thing I don't like much is more nu-metal nuances (especially on The Bad Thing.) The way Sumerian Records has been going the last few years, I really wouldn't expect any innovation anymore like they used to."[2] Can always count on Hayden for mature, logical music discourse ;) :). With everything said, hopefully the double release ends up actually being their best yet.

  • xVictimOfADownx

I kind of agree that this these last 2 songs are less complex, but hey these guys are most people's go-to djent band and with how popular they have gotten i'm not surprised they are just taking that sound further (their last album billboarded quite high for this kind of music.) The only thing I don't like much is more nu-metal nuances (especially on The Bad Thing.) The way Sumerian Records has been going the last few years, I really wouldn't expect any innovation anymore like they used to.

I can also expand upon the whole Spencer thing and why instrumentally I'm not impressed with Scourge, and why this PREVIEW/taste/track does not hint at "yes we have been taking all the time off working painstakingly on this new Juggernaut release" at all, but this is getting really 'tl;dr' right now.

I know Clear was an experiment, buckos. I was saying why people might have a bad taste in their mouth and I AM >>>HOPING<<< we are not seeing the devolution of the band in general; from what it seems, Spencer vocals are mutating into pop, which is making them SEEM like another Bring Me The Horizon Lisa Frank band that belongs on pop radio, and the way they market is just a vibe/taste. Scourge shows that the pop vocals he tested in Clear aren't going away, and 1 song is too many songs with that style. You guys need to back off your defense horses a bit. CLEARLY (rofl) I can't judge an album I haven't heard yet, I just have a bad feeling about it, and that would have been understood if my previous comments were actually read properly, if at all. Going through the shoutbox I'm not the only one here and I don't blame the suspicious tone. YAY for HONEST criticism.

I liked the song more than I thought I would, had a brooding atmosphere which is quite different for them. They always did well at that super sugary-pop-prog-core sound but it seems like they are shaping into one of the better mainstream metal acts at the moment even if their music is getting more accessible and rock sounding *shrug*.

Clear lackluster? Wat? Please elaborate, because my inability to stop listening to it says otherwise.

  • Ondskapet

Clear was an experiment where every band member made a song on their own without input from the others, which obviously is the reason for it's lack of consistency, it was basically a compilation of random demos. Also what the fuck does the website have to do with the quality of the album?

  • SednoKier

Isn't it a bit ignorant to base your opinion off of a website design, an EP with a completely different concept, and a single song on a double album release?

    last month
  • vividserenity

Ok so I was trolled, big deal, point still holds - scourge isn't that great. Scourge, combined with their lackluster Clear EP, combined with their shitty new website layout that looks like the boy version of Lisa Frank, it's no wonder people already have a bad taste in their mouths.

You thought borthlecash was a real Periphery song? That's amazing.

    last month
  • vividserenity

There are actually 2 songs released currently and they are both disappointing. I'm hoping the rest of the album won't reflect these two songs, but the ones out now "The Scourge" and "Borthelcash" do NOT sound like the amount of time they have been supposedly taking on Juggernaut. :( The good news is >>>IF<<< Periphery's new release ends up sucking, Corelia's new LP will make up for it, for me anyway.

  • Ondskapet

Word of advice to anyone passing judgement this early, since the new record will be a double concept album this song is only a square inch of a big painting, and it would be foolish to dismiss it all because this one song wasn't the hit you expected. That said, I love it.
