Biography

Mike Hadreas, also known as Perfume Genius is a singer/songwriter from Seattle, Washington, US. Perfume Genius began when he moved from New York to his mother’s home in Everett, WA. In these relatively isolated conditions, Hadreas felt a compulsion to make music and began composing fragile yet brutally honest songs on the piano. By 2008 he had set up a MySpace page and began offering his music there, along with similarly spare and evocative homemade music videos. Turnstile released the single Mr. Peterson — the tale of a suicidal, pedophile high-school teacher — in 2009. Perfume Genius’ full-length debut, Learning, which presented its tracks in the order in which they were recorded, arrived and released on June 21, 2010.

@MadAzAHatter - Nice words. I feel the same way too about Mike's music. It has an honesty to it which I rarely find in other artists i've been recommended that are supposedly similar. I love Antony Hegarty. He has a soul like no other but his music is often very grand and theatrical, a different listening experience. Mike's albums (the first especially) are extremely raw. "Learning" sounds like an album that was never supposed to be heard. Intimate and imperfect, yet that is what makes it so special. I'm beyond excited that Mike is in London now working on his third record which supposedly is going to be a lot darker. The only other artist i've heard who's music is as sincere and beautiful as Perfume Genius is Soap&Skin. Her music is just as special and does funny stuff to me. Incredibly poignant. She's worth a listen for anyone that appreciates Mike's music.

since i first started listening to Mike's music (a number of years ago under an older account) i have often gotten recommendations from friends and last.fm, trying to match up PG's music with compatible artists.... this has included everyone from Patrick Wolf to Antony & the Johnsons.... Antony certainly has brought the depth of emotion and soul searching pain to his music but Mr Hadreas still is the winner of bare bones, day to day, real life intimacy... his first album was barren of production and made you feel you were in his living-room sharing his life with you.... his second album carries this through with greater production value without loosing that intimacy with his audience.... i dunno if he is a genius or not but he is a master of touching a persons heart and spirit... if you allow him to do so.............
