Pavement are an American indie rock band. Although they experienced only moderate commercial success, they achieved a significant cult following, and their music has been a major influence on many bands of the late 1990s and beyond. For most of the band’s career, they consisted of Stephen Malkmus (vocals, guitar), Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg (guitar, vocals), Mark Ibold (bass), Steve West (drums) and Bob Nastanovich (percussion, vocals).
Pavement formed in Stockton, California, in 1989 as a studio project of guitarists and vocalists Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg, known originally only as “S.M.” and “Spiral Stairs”, respectively. Their debut EPs were extremely lo-fi releases titled Slay Tracks (1933-1969), Demolition Plot J-7, and Perfect Sound Forever. They were recorded at Louder Than You Think, the home studio of infamous Stockton local and former hippie Gary Young. The eccentric and aging hipster also provided drums. Upon first hearing the duo’s songs, Young was quoted as saying, “this Malkmus idiot is a complete songwriting genius”.
Pavement’s most obvious influence during this time was English rock band The Fall, although Kannberg stated in a 1992 interview that he preferred The Replacements to The Fall. The Fall’s primary member, Mark E. Smith, would often angrily claim through the years that Pavement was a “rip-off” of his band and that they didn’t “have an original idea in their heads”. However, some of the other members of The Fall actually enjoyed Pavement.

The best Pavement album money can buy is actually The Slanted & Enchanted : Luxe Redux reissue, it has the best b-sides you'll find on any of the reissues (Brightens the Corners reissue b-sides are a close 2nd though!). The best Pavement album in my opinion however is Wowee Zowee. Lastly, the CR CR reissue has by far the worst b-side CD out of all the reissues.

I started in high school when an english teacher I had been discussing music with let me borrow his copy of S & E... it took me a couple of years to really 'get' Pavement, but once I did I was so thankful for that.

So I'd caught the end of Summer Babe being played on the radio, maybe the last 30 seconds back in 1991 or 1992 and heard the name Pavement.. It had pricked my interest. A few weeks later I was hanging out with this hippy girl, we stayed up all night, took acid and walked around some lakes looking at bats. It was a hot hot night. I remember that. In the morning fighting backache, knowing we would not sleep - we walked into town, about 30 minutes walk. After forcing food inside I went into the record shop. Saw S & E on vinyl and immediately bought it... Later that day I got home. My family were in the garden enjoying a sunny Sunday, I went to my room opened the window and drew the curtains. I can almost hear the initial needle bumps and then those opening guitars... I often wonder what shes doing now...
