Biography

Pausal is the collaborative work of Simon Bainton and Alex Smalley, two friends from Hampshire, UK.

In the Summer of 2005 they commenced a series of improvised recording sessions. These resulted in an EP for Highpoint Lowlife in 2007 (later enhanced for reissue in 2009).

Their live shows are a complete immersive experience, utilizing large scale visuals created by the band. They have performed with artists such as Grouper, Mountains, Stars of the Lid, Greg Haines and Jodi Cave.

“Lapses” is their first full-length album and documents their activity over the last three years, including studio versions of material they had been playing live. “Lapses” is available on CD and digitally from Barge Recordings.

It quickly establishes itself as a monumental setting of multi-tiered ambient-drone that’s so densely woven the source materials used to generate it are all but camouflaged in the process, though piano notes gradually come into clearer focus as the piece unfolds. Suffice it to say that over the course of its running time the track undergoes multiple changes in morphing from something billowing, vaporous, and cloud-like at its start into something more compact and retiring as it inches towards its close. Pausal executes such transformations with subtlety and elegance, and it is qualities such as these that distinguish their handling of the album’s material most.
