Paul Tobias was born Paul Huge in Lafayette, Indiana in 1963. Paul met Axl Rose for the first time in high school, and they ended up being pretty good friends. They played together in the same band when they lived in Lafayette, and they wrote “Back Off Bitch” around that time. In 1982, Paul moved to Los Angeles to find a band. He ended up playing in various cover bands, and he met Axl there. Paul co-wrote “Shadow Of Your Love” with Axl and Izzy at some point in Los Angeles.

While Paul’s old friend, Axl, and his band Guns N’ Roses became famous, Paul continued playing in various L.A. bands. He didn’t really get anywhere with music, until Axl asked Paul to play guitar on the Guns N’ Roses’ version of The Rolling Stones’ song “Sympathy For The Devil” (that was made for the “Interview With the Vampire” soundtrack), in 1994. Paul accepted, and from 1994, Paul worked with Guns N’ Roses as a member of the band.

Slash didn’t like the fact that Axl had kicked out Gilby Clarke, and he didn’t think Paul was good enough for the band. Duff too had some concerns regarding Paul joining, because he felt like Axl dictated the direction of the band. He wanted to have some sort of vote about it. Both Slash and Duff soon left, and when Matt was fired after being incapable of dealing with differences between himself and Paul, he blamed Paul for the “break up” of the band.
