Biography

Paramaecium is one of the few christian death doom bands out there, and released their first album, Exhumed of the Earth, in 1993. The music is in the vein of early My Dying Bride, with surging, heavy riffs, and some occasional use of violin, flutes and female clean vocals.

In 1993 Paramaecium released their debut album. The band consisted of Andrew Tompkins on vocals and bass, Jason De Ron on guitar, and Jayson Sherlock on drums. The music was inspired by Cathedral, early My Dying Bride and Anathema. The band incorporated flute and violin sounds as well as a soprano alongside the usual musical offerings of death and doom metal.

Paramaecium added rhythm guitarist Chris Burton in 1995 and released their second album, Within the Ancient Forest, which was accompanied by a fantasy novel of the same name written by Tompkins. The album was more diverse and technical, and involved female vocalists, harpsichord, piano, flute and cello.

The third album, A Time to Mourn, was released in 1999 and marked the departure of all previous band members except Tompkins. The band no longer had a touring lineup, so guest musicians were used, including guitarist Ian Arkley (formerly of Seventh Angel, Ashen Mortality and My Silent Wake). After a five year break, Paramaecium returned in 2004 with Echoes from the Ground. The album again featured Tompkins as the only original member, but held firmly to the band’s doom and death metal roots while again incorporating soprano and violins.

Seriously, why do we need to call it "christian metal"... You don't call any other band "atheist metal"

"stupid tag...must be those stoopidiest Religulous fanatics, music is art, peole still don´t get it" You're way incoherent, man. How do you even justify your statement by saying "music is art"? Religious music is no more or less artistic than nonreligious music. Christian Metal is an appropriate tag for the band. Sorry that the radio situation doesn't work out, I'm sure there are other ways of finding similar bands.

yeah... i really admire this band. their exhumed of the earth album back in 96 was the first doom metal song i had ever heard of its kind. I was all into the fastest shit imaginable, but this band showed me that slow and groovy is just as affective. I then heard my dying bride and then i heard stoner metal. anyway... Paramecium (though i know they didn't really start any of those styles) were a great gateway band to that side of metal for me. Also... them being not preachy at all... I liked that a lot about them being a Christian band. And of course... the one and only Jason Sherlock... one of my favorite metal drummers of all time. Man... he really did it all. His new bands sound really kick ass.

All of their music is amazing, but I think that Within the Ancient Forest might be their best

@Arnonrg: Just wondering, why is that amazing? I'm sure that a band of Christians or non-Christians are both capable of playing good and/or original metal music. I agree with you about this band being great though.

It's amazing how a Christian band can be as good and original genre as other Metal bands

The whole 'Christian Metal' tag is stupid. I play Paramaecium radio, wanting to listen to some doom/death metal, all I get are bands tagged with 'Christian Metal'.....Religion doesn't determine genres, people! They are a doom band, not a Christian Metal, Jewish Metal, Islamic Metal, Atheistic Metal, Luciferian Metal, Buddhist Metal, Agnostic Metal, LaVey Satanist Metal, or anything else!!
