• Band of the week countdown - #27

    11 Jul 2015, 10:55 by Hollow0ne

Along with my countdown of top 365 songs, I'll be running a band/artist of the week countdown as well. This list is also based on my Last.fm charts: it's my top 52 artists (as of January 3rd 2015).

    27. Pantera

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7EQlfprV9E

I really discovered Pantera as late as in late 90's/early 2000. But it didn't take me long to know that Pantera was/is one of the most important bands of heavy metal genre.

Pantera's earliest albums (the before Cowboys From Hell -era) were somewhat uninteresting and pretty bland. But when Philip Anselmo joined and they added new kinda grooves to their sound, it was a kick in the ass that metal music needed at that time. The genre was spoiled by all the cheesy hair metal bands and their endless copycats. Rock and metal scene would be totally different if it wasn't for Guns N' Roses and Pantera.

Sadly they broke up in rather nasty way and more sadly one of the greatest guitar players of all time…
  • Tuesday Ten: Numbers

    16 Mar 2011, 07:25 by amodelofcontrol

It’s been a week of numbers. What with Daisy and mine’s sixth anniversary, yesterday being a year of me being in my current job, and at least two 40th birthdays in the past week – not to mention Daisy’s Grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary in three weeks time, and with nuclear fears in the news again from Japan, next month also marks 25 years since the Chernobyl Disaster. So let’s go for songs featuring numbers. A slightly random list, and a slightly random subject, but hey, on with the show.

As usual, most of it is on a Spotify playlist, and also on a YouTube playlist.

    Pantera
    Fucking Hostile
    Vulgar Display of Power
It probably ought to have been The Ramones opening this, but if I’m thinking of a count-in, it’s this every single time. It’s a quick “ONE TWO THREE FOUR” before Pantera’s shortest song blasts your face off for two-minutes and forty-nine seconds of some of the most anthemic metal in existence. Don’t think it’s anthemic? Everyone who goes to alternative/metal clubs knows the opening and chorus to this.

  • 2010.08.19 - Titan @ Sneaky Dee's

    26 Aug 2010, 02:09 by FinSquandrago

I've come to like Titan quite a bit since that "oh, heck, why not?" show in Mississauga last summer. Picked up a solid EP then, ordered the terrific follow-up a few months later, and the previews of the upcoming album are pretty much threatening to shatter every bone in my neck. This somehow hadn't translated into seeing them live again, though, until last week, and I'm kicking myself for that: a couple of weeks after that first encounter, they played at Sneaky Dee's with Sons of Otis and frickin' Jucifer, and I could probably see my way clear (in hindsight) to giving up one bollock or the other to have been there.

Anyway, another one of their semi-regular gigs at the House of Indie Nachos rolled around and a bunch of bands I had never heard of were on the bill. (Maybe co-worker Steve had babbled something about Lost Cities in my direction before...?) Less money than transit fare back to Oakville would have cost me later, I was checking out the guitar-controlled machine antics of This Is Picture
  • Tuesday Ten: Swearing

    28 Jul 2009, 14:02 by amodelofcontrol

Ideas for future Tuesday Tens are coming thick and fast at the moment, and indeed I have the core of two more already completed too, and this week's was a late change of plan, mainly after I realised just how many songs could be included. So the other two I have planned will be held off until into August.

This week, then, it's about swearing. Not just the odd use of a swear-word in a song, though, but more extensive use of swearing - and not just the word "fuck", either. Although saying that, my iTunes came up with 237 entries when I searched just for the word "fuck". Admittedly there was one compilation and one album, but still...So, here goes with ten songs with good or notable uses for swearing...

    MC5
    Kick Out the Jams
    Kick Out the Jams
Quite possibly the best intro to a song ever, the immortal lineAnd right now it's time to...Kick Out The Jams, Motherfuckers...!got the band into a lot of trouble with their record label and even caused trouble with some stores refusing to stock the record. …

  • Thoughts on Lamb of God's Wrath

    8 Feb 2009, 08:15 by nufy8

If the New Wave of American Heavy Metal has a torchbearer, then surely Lamb of God is there holding the flame up high. The magnificence of Ashes Of The Wake and Sacrament cannot go unappreciated, but what is a band to do at this point in its career? How does it move forward, if it does at all? Wrath, the band's latest album, gives us the answer: hit 'em, and hit 'em hard.

The boys from Virginia haven't ever really been restrained in their music, but with this release, a whole new level of aggression has surfaced. The sound of Wrath is built around sweeping thrash attacks that attempt to outdo each other as the album progresses. There's the blitzkrieg of "Contractor" that taps into the vein of "Fucking Hostile" with short, forceful riffs backed by frantic timekeeping. The sidewinder punch of "Set to Fail" and the deft soloing in "Grace" are signs of Lamb of God's new sonic mission statement: speed in all things.

  • Bands Survey

List 10 musical artists you like, in no specific order (do this before reading the questions below)!

    1. Pantera
    2. Black Sabbath
    3. Down
    4. Nirvana
    5. Children Of Bodom
    6. No Doubt
    7. Rammstein
    8. Metallica
    9. Nightwish
    10. Slipknot

-What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
    Don't Speak in about 1995/6

-What is your favorite song of 8?
Damn... Maybe Fade to Black, but it's really difficult to choose. I go through phases of liking different albums.

-What kind of impact has 1 left on your life?
They opened me up to new genres of metal, such as Southern American doom and thrash. I'm glad I recognised Dimebag's genius before he died.

-What is your favorite song of 5?
Hmm probably Deadnight Warrior, especially the live version.

-How many times have you seen 4 live?
    Ha zero

-What is your favorite song by 7?
I love most of their songs, but if I have to choose: Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen?

-Is there any song by 3 that makes you sad?
    Pretty much all of them.
  • New Lamb of God song

    20 Dec 2008, 05:01 by nufy8

American post-thrashers Lamb of God have released the first taste of Wrath, the band's next album, due on February 24. The song is called "Contractor" and can be downloaded here. A quick, free sign-up is required, and it takes a bit to receive the download link in your inbox, but it's well worth the wait.

As for the track, it's fast as all hell. I was immediately reminded of Pantera's "Fucking Hostile"; like that classic song, it has a short, forceful groove about it. These guys just don't disappoint.
