«..We stumbled across a brief panta rhei in dictionary and liked it at once. It’s Greek for “everything is in a state of flux“. And so we are. We introduced a touch of informality and finally it was an untranslatable Panda Rhei pun as the name of our band, panda bear as the band’s mascot..»
Originally a traditional rock guitar quartet (two guitars, bass and drums), the band has always been in continuous stir, cracking on new outrageous sounds and emotional invaders. Panda Rhei is Elena, Andrey, Pavel and Andre.
Panda Rhei played live gigs in clubs and venues in Moscow, including Aktoviy Zal, B2, Tabula Rasa, Sexton, Strangel, Yello club, Caribe, and Podmoskovie, a number of solo performances. In 2007 Panda Rhei released a 6-track EP with support of friends at Umbrella Records. Following the example of the British alternative rock band Radiohead, the limited trial release was simply given away at the club entrance for any trifle. The music gained much interest and rave reviews.
It is rather tricky to classify Panda Rhei stylistically – the band’s signature sound combines both rigid pressure and lightness. Playful punk rock with its unrelenting drum fury and somber grunge with its pile-driving heavy riffs go hand in hand with tuneful elements of post-rock, melodic synthpop structures and rock'n'roll vigor. Those who fancy energy of Yeah Yeah Yeahs or PJ Harvey and dig such iconic grungy bands as Nirvana, QOTSA, Tool and Smashing Pumpkins, should find enough. Yearning songs of hope, love and escapism create an intense, layered sound and vivacity. And it is not another trendy indie rock band, it’s not about posing - it's about feeling.
2009's going to be a rocket-fuelled year for Panda Rhei: the band is off to the studio to record their debut album. It will include such songs as «Сandy Cane», «Shears», «Secret Signs» and many more. Meanwhile Panda Rhei plays live and you are mostly welcome!
