Biography

Japan (2010 – 2011)

PONTIACS was a Japanese garage rock band consisting of three members. The band’s existence and its participating musicians were announced in early June, 2010. It is worthy of note that both 浅井健一 (Asai Kenichi) and 照井利幸 (Terui Toshiyuki) were central members of the well-known rock band BLANKEY JET CITY, before it disbanded in 2000, and that the two of them also worked together on recording Asai’s first solo album, Johnny Hell. Before joining PONTIACS, drummer 有松益男 (Arimatsu Masuo) has played with acts such as BACK DROP BOMB , FAKE? and MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS.

The band’s first release was the two-track single GALAXY HEAD MEETING / SHINJUKU released in June, 2010. While this single received limited distribution, their first album – GALAXY HEAD MEETING – was made available in major record stores in November, 2010. At the very end of the year, PONTIACS released RED BEE / デリカテッセン (RED BEE / Delicatessen), another double single released in the same manner as the one before it. Their third single, Cold Finger Girl, is particular in that although it was written by Asai, it was first recorded and released by actor and J-POP singer 栗山千明 (Kuriyama Chiaki). This version was featured as the opening track to the anime series Level E. The PONTIACS version of said single went on sale several months afterwards.

PONTIACS disbanded in late 2011, merely a year after the release of their debut album.

Members:
浅井健一 (Asai Kenichi) – Vocal, guitar
照井利幸 (Terui Toshiyuki) – Bass
有松益男 (Arimatsu Masuo) – Drums

Just a heads up after reading through the newest Ongaku to hito magazine: Pontiacs seems to be done for now, due to difficulties between Benzie and Terui. It's a shame -- I really liked the Galaxy Head Meeting album.

    For me it's something like SHERBETS > BJC/solo > JUDE/PONTIACS.

Aaw, personally I would rate both SHERBETS and JUDE over BJC.

No Asai project can beat BLANKEY JET CITY. SHERBETS couldn´t and PONTIACS can´t as well.

They've been playing it live since before Kuriyama released her single :)

I like the style they're going with for the PVs, though. Fits very well with the music itself. Also! Not long time until the DVD's released now! I'm totally pumped for it :D

Haha, kind of seems like it if you jump straight into it. He's been slowing down though; except for PONTIACS (and some songwriter/producer duties) there's not a lot going on at the moment. You won’t hear me complaining though – best three-piece rock band in the country. Also: I just can't get over how great RED BEE is. It kills. Simple as that.

Just found out about this band over the weekend! I need some kind of Benzie smartphone app to keep track of all these projects.

Alrighties! New single (Cold Finger Girl, which has already been played live regularly) and live DVD announced. Releases at the end of April. Particularly looking forward to the DVD.

Agreed, their styles are not all that different. I would say PONTIACS is more hard-hitting, though, and kind of funkier in a way. Also, I updated the wiki here on last.fm just now, with some more up to date information.

In a way they remind me of The Birthday, but they're still very different. I like their sound! *_*

That's part of the reason why we're fans, I suppose :) There's one thing I wish they had concentrated more on when making the (super-awesome) album, though, and that's lyrics.

Damn... this is album is really great. One of the best this year. It's almost crazy... I mean Kenichi Asai released so much stuff in past years and yet he's still able to be part of something this... fresh... and awesome.

True that. And there's more of that coming our way -- the 2nd PONTIACS single's just been announced for release on the 18th of December.

Looking forward to this album, the 3 songs i've heard vary quite a bit. So it's hard to guess what the rest of the album will be like.
