Needs a remastered version pronto. I know PJ loves Albini's work for this album but c'mon, Rid of Me could totally benefit from a new rework.

The production is perfect for these songs.

Great songwriting. Production-wise it's a slight step up from Dry, but relistening to this I'm surprised that Steve Albini's production is kinda worse than I remember. The bass constantly gets lost in the mix and lacks low-end power (hello, Missed, Dry), the drums at points sound like they were recorded in a tiny bathroom and had some cheap gated reverb pasted on to compensate for how tiny they sound (what's up, Legs, Dry, Man-Size, Ecstasy), the guitars' distortion sounds lifeless (oi, Hook, Dry), and... well, I guess I was wrong to expect this to kick more sonic arse than In Utero or Pinkerton? It sounds like the instruments a lot of the time aren't balanced properly and busy trying to be louder than each other, which combined with Albini's fanatical love of recording everything live, gives the album this kind of swampy, indistinct, messy ambience, making it seem like it lost some of its power. No wonder for TBYML they finally hired an engineer who knew how to separate instruments!

Nothing will top it, but Let England Shake has certainly came very close.

placental_fluid's post was from Christgau's review, which is markedly creepy and borders on offensive with its sexism; I'm not sure why you think it's the best thing on last.fm!
