People into music (so almost everyone in some respect) probably change in musical taste and attitude throughout their life, even beyond a certain level of musical maturity. Here I analyse mine; I will look back and add to it when I notice a change, and I encourage others to do the same. Because I have another journal devoted to it, I don’t include here any of the bands or music I’ve formed/created, only the stuff I’ve learned and listened to.
1. I took piano lessons in primary school. It was my parents’ choice, and although I didn’t come to enjoy or persue it, it gave me a very basic introduction to music.
2. In secondary school, following my parents’ advice to take music up again, I decided to start playing the saxophone. I didn’t listen to any music recreationally, and with no inspiration I chose this instrument purely because I liked the sound. This was a mistake in itself, so I was doomed to failure; however, my tuition with a particular teacher was absolutely invaluable. …
