Toronto, Canada (1992 – present)

Our Lady Peace is a Canadian alternative rock band consisting of Raine Maida (vocals), Jeremy Taggart (drums), Duncan Coutts (bass), and Steve Mazur (guitar).

The band’s original guitarist Mike Turner placed a “musicians wanted” ad in Toronto-based Now Magazine in 1992. Michael Raine Maida, a criminology student at the University of Toronto, was the first to reply and formed the band ‘As If’. The band was short-lived due to the differing priorities of its members. Later, Raine and Mike attended a music seminar where they met Arnold Lanni, the owner of Arnyard Studios.

Mike Turner and Raine Maida soon formed another band with bassist Chris Eacrett. The band refused to do showcases for the handful of labels that were interested in them; the most prominent of these being Sony Records. Sony Music Canada’s president Rick Camilleri, along with vice-president of A&R Mike Roth & Gary Furniss, director of music publishing, visited their practice space and signed the band, despite the obvious risks. That same day, Jeremy Taggart joined the band.

With strong fanbase support in both Toronto and Montreal, Our Lady Peace was signed to Sony Records and won wide recognition with their debut album Naveed. Naveed was released in Canada in 1994 and in the United States the following year. After the release, Eacrett left the band, replaced with Duncan Coutts. Jamie Edwards, a keyboardist, joined in 1996.

Later, in December 2001, Mike Turner left the band due to creative differences. In April 2002, Steve Mazur was announced as the new guitarist for the band.

why thank you, it is almost as poetic as do you like it and its elegantly flowing stanzas, in fact. raine maida's eloquence is perfectly exemplified by the lines, "do you like it? yeah, yeah. do you like it? yeah, yeah." his achingly beautiful pleas such as "i changed all the things that you wanted to change" contrast with his heartbreaking inner struggle; "i just wanna get out! stuck inside of this, waiting for something else, something to exist." raine's devastating struggle with his own personal demons have never been so flawlessly immortalized as in this hidden gem of a song.

The experience and emotions tied to listening to Do You Like It? are like witnessing the stillborn birth of Raine Maida while simultaneously having the opportunity to see him play in the afterlife on Imax.

"crappy music (not saying it is, but when stacked against the older stuff, it's obviously not as good)" .. Clumsy was my favourite album in the world until Gravity came along, but we all have different tastes. "the older stuff found a way to be accessable and "abstract" at the same time." - Yes, but looking at my top tracks on lastFM since I joined in 2005, it seems that I like listening to the newer stuff A LOT more [again, we all have different tastes], and most of those are from Gravity, so I'm glad they did what they did. Perhaps they could have made the same songs on Gravity, only more abstract and less accessible: perhaps then I wouldn't have liked them as much, maybe I would've liked them even more. who knows. I see your point, but since I love gravity so much, I'm not upset that they weren't so 'creative' with it. Albeit, I'm very glad that OLP's music isn't ALL like gravity because it would be very monotonous, I like the fact that every album is different in its own way.

Also, anyone interested in OLP's 8th studio album (which has a possible 2010 release date), check out their Holiday Greeting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IJeowQnoGk

Like I've said before though, the older stuff found a way to be accessable and "abstract" at the same time. Why make accessable, crappy music (not saying it is, but when stacked against the older stuff, it's obviously not as good), when you can make accessable, creative, original muisc? I personally encourage the band to push their creative boundaries, not play it safe.

Basically, OLP's not my favourite band because they are creative, they're my favourite band because I enjoy listening to their music. The fact that they have incredibly creative songs like 'The Wonderful Future' (my 2nd most listened to OLP track according to lastFM), and 'Annie' , makes me love them even more. Matt Good's "Flight Recorder From Viking 7" is one of the most creative songs I know of, and "Everything is Automatic" is something any alternative band could do. I would still rather listen to Everything is Automatic all day than Flight Recorder. I didn't lose respect for Matt Good because Everything is Automatic happened to be accessible to the radio, it's actually one of my favourite songs and I love them for making it. I encourage creativity and abstractness, but I don't discourage the writing of more accessible music, especially if they turn out to be my favourite songs of all time (as in the case of OLP and Matt Good).

I'm glad they recorded gravity because it's my favourite album. Often I wake up craving to listen to Raine singing "i HOLD on ... i HOOOOOLLLD on" from Gravity's 'Sell my soul' .. I can't get enough of it. In 'Story about a girl' when he sings "i'll ALWYAS, OOOOOLLWAYS be there" , I can listen to that forever. Raine is the only person that can do that. I really hope OLP makes more songs like these because I love them, and none of the other 'typical generic' alternative bands can create the same effect as Raine does in those songs. I also hope that they make more creative songs like 'The Wonderful Future' , but I don't discourage them from making more generic songs like 'Life' and 'Love & Trust.' Whether or not they PUSPOSELY reduced their abstractness for popularity here is debatable. Maybe you're right, but Gravity's 'Bring back the sun' is one of their most creative works, both musically and lyrically, and it wouldn't have made it far on the charts had it been released.

@Suthy, I 100% agree. I'd even say OLP's first four have a great cross between accessibility and originality. It was just the right cross between pop hooks and creativity. After that, they ditched the creativity and relied on just the hooks (albeit recycled, more generic hooks).

the year is 2029, the machines will convince us that they are conscious, that they have their own agenda worthy of our respect, they'll embody human qualities and claim to be human, and we'll believe them.

@negrowallace - In the sense that hooks and harmony have the potential to override something a little more challenging, you're right, sometimes accessibility is wonderful. Case in point, a record like Annie's "Anniemal" manages to straddle that line between accessibility and originality. The difference, though, between that record or, say, a band like The Weakerthans, is that there's still that sense of originality; they don't sound derivative. It does not matter how many dollars or how many fans garbage reels you in, compromising your artistic integrity is never, ever, ever acceptable. Listen to crap, I don't care. However, please don't claim ditching creativity for popularity should be applauded.
