Mosely, Denmark (2000 – present)

Othala is a band from Mosely, Denmark. The band exists since 2000 and consist of Bo Pierre Bolander and Thomas Galinn Priiskorn.

Othala started as an alternative project to the underground black metal band Arven in which both members played. Othala is their effort to create a musical representation of the interests and reflections they have on the soul and beliefs of the Norse culture.

Othala is the name of the last and 24th rune in the Elder Futhark. The meaning of the rune, regardless of how it is specifically interpreted, revolves around the same general values. Legacy, Heritage, Odel, Property, Culture and Tradition. It is often associated with Odin. These are the exact values they seek to revive and retain with Othala; not as an imitation of how they were observed in earlier times but as a manifestation of their heritage – a continuation.

Othala is inspired by their surroundings. From nature, in Norse literature, folklore and mythology likewise. They do not merely paraphrase Norse myths; they interpret and use them as inspiration. They also come across themes in our personal experiences, which they strive to express in words and pictures in Othala. This is also one of the reasons why Othala does not have lyrics in English. They write their lyrics in Danish or Old Norse, because it fits with the themes and feels ‘right’.
