Biography

For over a decade, Orphx has been creating a unique fusion of electro-acoustic experimentation and propulsive dance music. Using an assortment of synthesizers, samplers, feedback systems, and various homemade instruments, Orphx combines the experimental aesthetics of early industrial music with the hypnotic pulse of techno, electro and dub.

Orphx began in 1993 in Dundas, Canada, as a trio consisting of Rich Oddie, Aron West and Christina Sealey. Oddie and West created the Xcreteria label to release the music of Orphx, drone side-project Antiform and related groups. West left in 1995 to pursue noise project Tropism with collaborator Johnny Dark and Orphx has since become the studio project of Rich Oddie, often working in collaboration with Christina Sealey on recordings and live performances.

Orphx has gained a substantial international following as part of the “rhythm noise” scene associated with European record labels such as Hands, Ant-Zen, Hymen, Ad Noiseam and Zhark. Oddie and Sealey have performed in numerous countries around the world, combining live audio with original video compositions that explore themes of social/psychological conflict, power and resistance. Each release has explored these themes from different angles and with different approaches to sound, ranging from minimalist soundscapes to relentless rhythm and noise.

I fucking love Orphx. I was a club DJ for years doing generic goth/industrial nights, always pissed off when the hot topic kids were hating on dark electronix. Then I became friends with the head of thee local O.T.O. Lodge and that's when the cool gigs came my way. For a DJ like me, having people come and request Cabaret Voltaire *or* complain because you "haven't played enough Asche" is like a dream gig. I loved building hyper-intense walls of aural vitriol & rage over tracks by Orphx, Main and Lustmord, among others. But Orphx is always 1st choice because of the beauty of their hypnotic repetition, i.e. Chalice. Some favorite artists to throw in over the bed ov Orphx: Hafler Trio, Nocturnal Emissions, old Current 93, Grey Wolves, The Harmonics Choir, Gyorgy Ligeti, Faust, NON, Art Bears, Stockhausen...the soundtrack to "Gummo" is a treasure trove. That Harmony Korine, man, he's got his finger on the pulse of righteous deviance.

cool info havikk- I was very reciently wondering how this band made a living. I've had all the cds for awhile now, but really enjoyed the live sets off bandcamp~ this thing of a groove evolving during a 30 min track is a real trip.

Rich Oddie of Orphx released a solo debut called Refraction in Nov. '11 Much of Orphx's recent sound slips in, but a great release. http://www.discogs.com/Rich-Oddie-Refraction/release/3205204
