A pivot point: this ends the album's nervous, twisted pop opening half. We'll be moving from the mechanical to the human as the album transitions between its halves. From here on out, atmospheric ballads--each with the human voice clear and powerful, and serving as the focal point in the mix--will fill the spaces between the experimental musique concrete tracks. This track feels a bit like the last gasp of the machines: it's their best attempt at creating music. What we have here is ersatz pop music, which is joined by a voice, Helena, that keeps butting in with inane DJ-style patter (e.g. "Music for your tape recorder"; "I hope you like it"; "This is Helena, your emcee today"; etc.). None of this is convincing--not the simplistic, generic song; not the bargain-basement recording of that piss-poor song; not the canned applause sprinkled throughout; not the synthesizers trying to mimic human voices; and not even "Helena," who sounds more synthetic the more we hear from her.
