• February 2011 - The Live Show Retrospective Part XVIII

    5 Feb 2011, 16:43 by el_backpulver

Hi everyone and welcome to a new year of concert reviews. 2011 looks promising so far, not only because there is already a bunch of concert highlights in my calendar, but also because splendid Orange Distortion finally reformed and set their resurrection show for 02/11/2011.

This year, I thought about trying a different writing style as I was told that my reviews are too subjective with unnecessary information on merch and crowd and feature only insufficient background information on bands and their musical background. I always thought to write stuff like this would be redundant since you're reading these reviews at last.fm and could gather all the information you wanted by clicking on the linked artist page. Also, I'm not writing for some fancy music mag or e-zine but for me and maybe a handful of people who’re actually reading this, so I never really felt to write very professionally. Still, criticism is welcome and so I'll try my best to strike a balance.

  • September 2009 - The Live Show Retrospective Part IX

    19 Sep 2009, 15:58 by el_backpulver

Hi everyone and welcome to the ninth part of my live show retrospective. September was stuffed with three great shows within one week. I also have to prepare for my oral diploma-exam, so, no time to dilly-dally. Let’s write (or in your case “read”)

09/12/2009 - Orange Distortion w/ BLACK BORN PHOENIX - Weiße Rose

Just one day after the eighth anniversary of 9/11 and there was again a reason to grieve about. The last concert of Orange Distortion with their current line-up was about to happen. So we all dressed in black (as usual), packed some handkerchiefs and moved our heavy-hearted bodies to the Weiße Rose in Schöneberg. Perfectly hidden in a small park, we almost went past it without noticing, but luckily only “almost” so that we made it on time for one of the saddest OD shows I’ve ever been to.
8:30 pm sharp, the quintet started its set with an energy and joy of playing, that it was hard to tell for an outsider, that this was in fact the last show with Alex and maybe Franz. …

    23 Jul 2009, 19:53 by el_backpulver

The second half of the year has begun, i finished my diploma thesis and now, there are many concerts coming up which need my attendance. Only three in July, but August and September will be great. So here we go....

    12/07/2009 - Orange Distortion w/ Raptruth - Waldbühne Fürstenwalde

My fears that Fürstenwalde might be a very small town proved to be true the last time OD played there, so I actually wasn’t surprised that the location that weekend was only one mile away from the one they played in June. Good for us, so we didn’t get lost, which would have been a problem since their singer was in my passenger seat. So, Orange Distortion, Open Air for the third time and the weather seemed to play along at first. We sat there on bales of hay, waiting for the second finalist of the “Rock für den Wald” competition we missed due to an enormous delay the last time.
Raptruth, as the name suggests, a local HipHop act, started their set around 8. …

Hooray, it's June. The weather sucks, so is there a better reason to go to see a live show? Indeedio, there isn't, so that's why you will be reading about some shows I've been to. Assuming you are reading this journal entry...duh!

06/06/2009 - Orange Distortion w/ BLACK BORN PHOENIX and Autumn Story Leaves - Eastend

Halftime of the Orange Distortion marathon, so it's time to activate the last reserves and get ready for the home stretch. The concert at Eastend was a nice short burst, where OD managed to keep the competition contained. But like running, one step after another. Second time at Eastend, a very nice club in Hellersdorf, great location, excellent sound and ambience, nice big stage and this night, "Styles Of Rock" presented by 5 bands. Again, a 5 Euro entrance seemed rather expensive, but since I really wanted to see two bands, it relativised itself. The first band, Raw Stuff, played their first gig ever as I was told, but we missed it almost entirely. …
  • May 2009 - The Live Show Retrospective Part V

    5 May 2009, 14:17 by el_backpulver

Hi everybody and welcome to part V of my live show retrospective. This month seems rather bleak concerning live shows….yet. We’ll see what comes up, but to be honest this month started better than all the ones before. It was just three days young and already blew me away with an awesome concert

05/03/2009 - Death Is Not Glamorous w/ The Riot Before and Bridge and Tunnel - Lokal

The “Week of Death” reached its peak on this day, with Death By Stereo having played a few days earlier and Death Before Dishonor would follow up two days later. Since I wasn’t attending neither one of those two concerts, I can’t tell you which of the three with “Death” in the title was the best, but I can definitely tell you that this concert at the Lokal was hard to compete with. And with a ticket price of 6 to 7 € (you could choose how much you wanted to pay, we chose the golden centre, 6.50 €) for three great bands and t-shirt prices between 9 and 12 € this concert was worth its money a million times. …
  • April 2009 - The Live Show Retrospective Part IV

    5 May 2009, 14:12 by el_backpulver

Hi dudes and dudettes, come on in and read about the concerts I've been to in April. Only two concerts and both of them of my favouritve local band Orange Distortion. If you don't know them check them out or at least read my reviews...it's free too.

    04/24/2009 - Orange Distortion - Ballhaus Spandau

Well, you can see how much I like these guys when I decide to take a 35 km trip just to see them play live on a friday evening around 11:45 pm. The Ballhaus Spandau wasn't that easy to find with all the road works and redirections but we made it on time. It is very plain yet nicely located near the Havel, I think and when we got in, I was suprised how big and advanced this club was.
Since we only came to see Orange Distortion play I can't say anything about the prior bands, I hope you can forgive me that. Around midnight, the stage was entered by, as it seemed, a dutch rock-version of the Backstreet Boys (they are five guys, too). …
  • March 2009 - The Live Show Retrospective Part III

    27 Mar 2009, 20:57 by el_backpulver

Hooray, yet another month has passed and I've been to three great concerts. That is the way it should be like every month. Why? Well, read it yourself....

    03/07/2009 - Orange Distortion - Intersoup

Phew, 2009 seems to have started pretty good for Orange Distortion. An impression you didn't immediately get after arriving at the Intersoup, a mixture of cocktail-bar, soup restaurant an (obviously) concert stage. Ah well, there wasn't actually a stage, to tell the truth it was a basement with comfy chairs which stood higher above the ground than the band itself. And I sat on one of them (a chair, not a band member....duh!!!). Why I remained seating on a rock concert. Well, the basement was very low, very small and very VERY crowded, so it wouldn't have mattered if you had sat or stood in the second "row", you wouldn't have seen anything both ways. And since I'm not the youngest anymore I chose to stay in the back…
