Tokyo, Japan

Ok city ok is a Tokyo-based rock band centered around American expatriate Kay Grace, former guitarist of The Duckhills.

Grace began performing as “ok city ok” in Tokyo in late 2003, posting demos of songs on and making desultory efforts to form a band. Promotional materials and bios during this time obscured Grace’s identity and nationality, presenting ok city ok as a band, although Grace later admitted in an interview, “I have been trying to convince people to play with me for about three years now—longer than the duckhills even existed. I have had two intermittent periods where I got a quorum together long enough to play live.”

Bassist Tom Suzuki and drummer Y. Shiva joined ok city ok in time to perform an opening slot for The Shakes in Tokyo in March 2005 and the band gigged intermittently in and around Tokyo, reworking Grace’s demos and gaining a reputation as an eccentric but formidable live act.

In 2007, ok city ok independently released Made by Elaborate Process, a 12-song album. Following an appearance at Toronto’s North By Northeast Music Festival (NXNE) in June 2007, the band played only a handful of shows. The lineup began shifting during this time, with Cayske Hinami joining on guitar and violin and Atsuya Akao and Chizu Nakamura filling in for Suzuki on bass. Personnel problems led to the band turning down invitations to the Liverpool Sound City festival and scrapping a planned U.S. tour in early 2008.
