About this album

Cause of Death is a 1990 album by American death metal band Obituary. Cause of Death is considered a classic album in the history of death metal. The artwork was done by artist Michael Whelan. It is their first release with permanent member Frank Watkins on bass, and also their first and only album with guitarist James Murphy, previously of the group Death.

The cover art of this album was used in an H.P. Lovecraft collection, Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre, and part of it was used in The Tomb and The Doom That Came to Sarnath paperbacks. It was supposed to be the cover of Sepultura’s album Beneath the Remains, but Roadrunner Records let Obituary use it first, even though Cause of Death was released in 1990, a year after Beneath the Remains. Sepultura chose another Michael Whelan illustration for Beneath The Remains’s cover.

Lead guitarist Allen West didn’t join Obituary for their second album, Cause of Death, which makes a bigger difference than you might expect. His replacement is a close associate of the band, James Murphy of the band Death — the man many consider to be the godfather of death metal — and he brings his own style to Cause of Death, resulting in an album that sounds like a hybrid of Obituary and Death.

Superb. It took so long for me to start enjoying this album (actually it took a long time for me to enjoy Obituary itself, because it is a band that I know for many years but I just couldn't understand what was the big deal). Now, from its slow riffs to the fast ones, I just love this shit.

Hard to believe this one's almost 25 years old, this was my initiation into death metal along with Death's Leprosy. Still sounds amazing!

Fun fact about this album: Roadrunner mixed up the album arts, this was originally meant for Sepultura's Beneath the Remains

The album art was originally the art for Sepultura's "Beneath the Remains" but the label gave it away to Obituary at the last minute.

Still in love since I heard it first when I was about twelve or so, scared me out then but that was somehow the reason why I listened to death metal at that time. Fuckin' masterpiece!
