Nunbient is an ambient/electro-acoustic collaboration between Joff Winks and Matt Baber, both of who being better known for their work in Joff Winks Band and the Zappa tinged, Canterbury influenced Antique Seeking Nuns.
Nunbient One is the first album in which Baber and Winks have explored field recording and sound design as the primary catalyst for music creation. The album was recorded in response to the seemingly bleak times in which we live, as the title “Just Another Dark Age” suggests, are we living on the brink of another dark age period? The record can be described as a visually evocative and cinematic journey in 45 minutes that swings between moments of luminous and hallucinatory sound, alongside claustrophobic and tense aural collages. There are often real instruments including vibes, guitars and harmonium woven through the synthetic sounds and ambient textures and the more traditional electronica influences are off set in this music by a strong compositional and melodic sense.
Influences from a wide range of artists can be heard including:: Bass Communion, ECM records, Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada, Tortoise, and composers such as Reich, Glass and Arvo Pärt.
