Biography

Number One Cup was formed in ‘93 after guitarists Seth Cohen and Pat O’Connell and drummer Michael Lenzi met at a Stereolab/Unrest/Gastr Del Sol show in Chicago. Although Lenzi was a drumming neophyte, Cohen and O’Connell were won over by his instincts and brought him into the fold. Before long, the three found themselves splitting song writing and singing chores with exciting results. After a few acclaimed singles for Lenzi’s Sweet Pea label the band began working on their Flydaddy debut.

The resultant Possum Trot Plan, recorded with new addition John Przyborowski on bass, was a wonderfully off-the-cuff collection of pop gems.

The album’s single Divebomb was a bona-fide indie hit in England and received attention at both college and commercial radio in the states. Nonetheless, the band found itself saddled with Pavement comparisons that were only partially justified. Through the constant touring that followed the band began to carve out a more singular identity and vision for itself. The first sign that a change was in the offing came in the form of the Kim Chee Is Cabbage EP a year later. A slightly better produced effort that found the band toying with a bigger rock sound, adding muscle and angularity to their melodies. The move towards a fuller, more realized sound took hold on Wrecked By Lions; the band’s sophomore full-length produced by Brad Wood. Songs like Ease Back Down and the irrepressibly melodic Malcolm’s X-Ray Picnic provided evidence the band was coming into its own.

If the question is "A poor man's Pavement?", the answer is " Hell no! Well, maybe a bit..."

I love/loved number one cup. I saw them live at Edinburgh Venue back in the day, on the Possum Trott Plan tour. I met the guys at an instore performance that afternoon and then at the gig they proceeded to give away their rider of beer to the audience as they didn't want it. A fantastic band. The Fireshow is well worth checking out, but my favourite is Michael lenzi solo project Resplendent. His double CD Iam free / am I free is amazing.

I can't say enough good things about this band. when I was thirteen I heard "Strange and Silent Staircase" on a snowboarding video, it was either Stomping Grounds, or Melt Down Project. I kinda lost track of the song, at that point being young, I didn't really think twice about it, I did look over the credits to see who it was, and I actually got into the Dead Kennedys through that video as well. Ten years later, I discovered, Lenzi, and Cohen's Fire Show, and I picked up "Possum Trot Plan" off ebay on a whim, curious about their former band, and when I heard the song it took a second, but I then I instantly remembered where it was from, and that feeling of rediscovery to what I had lost/forgotten was a feeling of joy, and enlightenment. I hope this band breaches the walls of young listeners someday. It's hard to choose a favorite, but "Autumn Lover" "No Particular Style" "Apple Cider" and "Lustrous Poppies", might be some of the finest songs ever written. I love this band!
