Norwich Face Transplant was formed in 2006 by Archie Macjoyce of Walthamstow, London, and Jamie Robson of Market Rasen, Lincolnshire. They met studying English at the University of East Anglia in Norwich.

Macjoyce had been involved in the performance poetry scene for several years, appearing at the Edinburgh and Glastonbury festivals, and was for a while a member of an ironic ‘performance poetry boy band’ called Aisle16. He left the group in 2004 when he became fed up with it, but continued occasionally to perform, for example at the 2008 Latitude Festival. His boisterous and sometimes confrontational poetic style relies heavily on rhyme, rhythm and wordplay, and his subject matter alternates between the political, social, cultural, anecdotal, emotional and facetious.

Robson, as a multi-instrumentalist who mainly concentrated on guitar and bass guitar, had been in bands from his teenage years, his most recent alternative rock-based project being Ghostrider, who played several gigs in Norfolk and Lincolnshire and were played on BBC Radio 6. He also became interested in producing electronic music, using computer programs and keyboards as well as his guitar and bass. His unique electronic-folk project, mbutterfly, eventually gave rise to Norwich Face Transplant, when he and Macjoyce decided to join their efforts.
