NOKTURNAL MORTUM’s brand of Folk infused, ancestral Black Metal has crossed borders to find international appreciation.

NOKTURNAL MORTUM evolved from the 1991 vintage Black Death Metal act Suppuration. This early act featured frontman Knjaz Varggoth, bassist Xaarquarth and drummer Munruthel. Following the issue of SUPPURATION’s 1992 album ‘Ecclesiastical Blasphemy’ the band invited new members Sataroth and guitarist Wortherax prior to folding.

A new act entitled CRYSTALINE DARKNESS sprang up which saw Varggoth and Munruthel in alliance with guitarist Karpath. This band in turn evolved into NOCTURNAL MORTUM in 1994 by unifying with Wortherax once again and with the adoption of a raw pure Black Metal direction added the ‘K’ to the title to become NOKTURNAL MORTUM.

1996 would see the project Vetche take shape, a Black Ambient collaboration between NOKTURNAL MORTUM’s Knjaz Varggoth, Saturious, Munruthel, Xaarquath, Sataroth and Karpath, alongside Lucifugum’s Balamut and Faunus. A four song demo cassette saw distribution through Kolovrat Productions.

A debut ‘Lunar Poetry’ was released in 1997 after which Wortherax left and former colleague Karpath filled the gap as Saturious was added to provide further keyboard depth. Both Saturious and Karpath also contributed to the debut album ‘Vozradujsja, Zemlja!’ from Slavonic war metal band Anthropolatri.

I'm actually willing to take Varggoth's slight renunciation of his former positions at face value, since as far as I know he's never said anything like that before, and combined with some of the other comments he's made in interviews about reading Lenin and Marx leading him to realise political theories are mostly matters of opinion it seems somewhat plausible that he would be rethinking some of his previous positions. But yeah, NeChrist and Weltanschauung definitely have political content to them.

While Topias_ has a very valid point, I do think it is a bit extreme for people to bash their obvious national socialist, biggot, and violent ideologies. Varggoth is a hypocrite to claim that Nokturnal Mortum isn't NS just to cover his ass and look good for the press. That lowers my respect for him only slightly, but the music he creates is simply astounding. People seem to look past that and view him as a politician, a nazi, etc. At heart, he is a musician, and Nokturnal Mortum is his artificial medium for him to express these ideas. Some people write books, others direct movies, yet Varggoth focuses on the black metal scene. It's safe to say he's had quite a huge influence, introducing the folk elements and inspiring tons of bands to do the same. Ideologies aside, his music is brilliant.

I don't know, there's something about NS bands that leaves a foul taste in my mouth, probably due to the fact that the artists seem to actually believe in what they're singing about when violent/antichristian lyrics are either a bit sarcastic or extended to extremism for shock value. If NSBM didn't generally oppose fame and fortune I would assume it were the same for them, but I'm not quite sure what to think as is.
