English actor, song writer, singer, playwright, and composer. Known for his biting use of sarcasm and irony. In general, a very British chap (and you really have to listen to ‘Don’t let’s be beastly to the Germans’, ‘Mad dogs and Englishmen’, and ‘There are bad times just around the corner’, to understand…). Noël Peirce Coward was born in Teddington, Middlesex, England on 16th December 1899. He died 26th March 1973 in Jamaica of heart failure.

It's a shame that Noel Coward at Las Vegas isn't properly on last.fm. There's some excellent work on that - a superb update on Let's Do It, and very decent versions of Mad Dogs and Englishmen, Matelot and a Bar on the Piccola Marina.

Anyone coming to Coward cold needs to put his vocal style to one side. He clearly picked it up from the pre-Bing Crosby crooners of the 1920s. Listen to his words in pieces such as Mad Dogs and Englishmen or the Stately Homes of England. If you're gay, have a listen to Mad about the Boy or Matelot. If you like the theatre, try Don't put your daughter on the stage Mrs Worthington. He could also craft some decent tunes (Room with a View).

Encephalon needn't be too ashamed. Coward was a very British phenomenon, though he did cross the Atlantic with his Las Vegas work in the 1950s. His musical and theatrical work got rubbished by the Angry Young Men revolt in the mid-1950s, though he maintained a sprightly presence in movies such as the (original) Italian Job and Our Man in Havana. As a playwright, he produced a lot of Stiff-Upper-Lip classics. If I remember right he did the script for the quintessential British clenched-emotion movie, Brief Encounter (well worth watching). He was massively camp, but got away with it, though I guess he took a psychological battering for having to stay in the closet. He was exceptionally funny. Very clever with words. He'll always remain a minority taste, but he won't be forgotten.

Is it bad that, even though I consider myself a semi-prolific jazz listener I had never heard of this guy until his music was played in Bioshock? :(
