NINA PROVENÇAL IS a realist. Everything about her – Her life, lyrics and music embody her energy and soul and often reflect the trials and tribulations that she and others around her feel and live daily. Her exceptional ability to enrapture her listeners and take them on a journey through a forest of thought with her storytelling and lyrical prowess always leaves her audiences wanting more.
Provençal is a rare breed though. Comfortable enough in her own skin and with a strong message to deliver, she doesn’t shy away from the issues swimming in her mind. And it’s her mixture of confidence, honeyed vocals and songs reflecting everyday situations, that most people avoid, which strikes a chord with her listeners.
The eldest child growing up in a single parent unit, Nina’s exposure to music and popular songs were limited. Most of her musical education was delivered to her via the wireless, listening to songs by George Benson, The Eurythmics, Eric Clapton and Anita Baker. “I loved listening to the radio especially because it reminded me of my father that I hardly used to see”. However unlike many other musicians today, Provençal hadn’t always consciously aspired to “grow up to be a singer like Mary J Blige” or the like. Today Proveçal’s distinctive brand of off-kilter stripped-down soul, delicately flirts just outside of the organic and folk spheres but carries a definite British band undercurrent. Fresh and innovative, there is a passion and a mutation of genres that makes her sound stand out of the pack. Her self written forthcoming album sees her words come to life with creative production from British producer Moezart. “Lyrics and performing live are important to me”, Provençal states, “Transferring words from the paper to actually performing them…I love it! It’s my time and I love the exchange with the audience” she enthuses, “The emotions that they evoke and the reactions that I receive when people hear them inspire me”. Provençal is a picture perfect example of an accomplished folk soul singer and is ready to unleash her music to an unsuspecting audience. A warm and charismatic persona matched with a dark, strong underpinning, Provencal’s musical calibre is no-brainer that is sure to make this chanteuse the name on everyone’s lips. Watch this space and witness the new child of British folk & soul, grow into a reputable songstress.
