For a band whose technical lifespan was just over two years, fewer bands have left more of an indelible impression upon the extreme music scene then Nihilist. Formed in 1987 the group bore the name Brainwarp before morphing into Nihilist. It was the brainchild of drummer Nicke Andersson, who was joined by two of his friends from summer camp, Alex Hellid on guitars and Leif Cuzner on bass and vocals (Daniel “Dudde” Strachal, who was a part of Brainwarp would later go on to play drums for Lobotomy).

Having first been influenced by the ’80s and bands, Nihilist were soon introduced to the likes of Death and Kreator and the bastard cross-pollination of influences would soon breed its own virulent new hybrid strain. For their earliest rehearsals and shows, they mixed a repertoire of cover songs and originals.

    It's crazy to know they all started this band around age 15, really makes me feel like a slacker, considering I'm sitting here, age 22, and no musical skills to speak of. Enough about that though; Nihilist/Entombed is the shit. Straight up, old-school Swedish Death Metal. Boss HM-2. \m/

    It's not the same band, as Johnny was kicked out, so it was that band without a previous bass player. And thank <insert your favorite deity> for that, as now we have Unleashed AND Entombed. Shame that Entombed started to suck after Clandestine. And also this: This page sure brings out the hipsters in death metal fans. Where is this "complexity" you speak of, Nakasuke? Nihilist are outwardly sloppy and far from dynamic in approach. [3]

    Nihilist > Entombed by far. Even though Left Hand Path and Clandestine are good records, they are far from the glory of Nihilist.
