‘The Poet and the Pendulum’ is the opening track of the album ‘Dark Passion Play’. The song is about Nightwish’s main composer Tuomas Holopainen’s life. It lasts almost 14 minutes, and is the longest song the band has ever made. The music is highly inspired by soundtracks and film scores.
The song is divided into five parts: “White Lands of Empathica”, “Home”, “The Pacific”, “Dark Passion Play” and “Mother & Father”.
The album’s production cost 500,000€, making it the most expensive album ever recorded in Finland. An extra 270,000€ was spent on filming the two music videos of the album

NightVermillion: Not an official one. And I don't think there should be - it's one song, that's it. Holopainen said in an interview that there was never a question about it, but after he had finished the song he decided to call the parts individual names.

this is by far the best song on DPP. But Tarja could sing the part that begins with"sparkle my scenery with turquoise waterfall, with beauty underneath, the everfree..." for those of you that think she couldn't sing this. But I know she could, I could imagine her singing all the songs on DPP if she hadn't left.

Epic has many meanings like most words now a days, people could be using it as slang. Adjective epic (comparative more epic, superlative most epic) - (slang) Extending beyond the usual or ordinary; extraordinary. Anyways, this song is amazing. The end part really gets to me, I can listen to it on repeat for hours.

PURE AWESOMENESS!!! First time I listened this impressed me a lot, the intro is fucking awesome, bombastic, epic! and I just fell in love with the final part "Mother & Father". This song is truly a masterpiece, but in my opinion is not the best song, "Ghost Love Score" and "Beauty of the Beast" beat this for me. At least "Ghost Love Score" and the three obviously are of the best songs ever created, words can't really describe them... <3
