The nightingale is still locked in the cage
The deep breath I took still poisons my lungs
An old oak sheltering me from the blue
Sun bathing on it's dead frozen leaves

How can you "just be yourself" when you don't know who you are? Stop saying "I know how you feel" How could anyone know how another feels?

"... underneath my bare feet". Lol. Anyone else yelled "The Elvenpath" after that? [13] Anyway - as already said, this song is something amazing. Love it.

In a certain moment, the melody reminds me "mother russia". I'm not crazy, I swear.

Song of Myself is a transcendental praise of life and tribute to walt whitman. The poem is connected with the rest of the album. The core of the poem is celebration of life as a whole, all dark stuff and beautiful things coexisting together. All this whitman-like free verses when narrator freely observes different people and situations, there is deep humanism and love for every living one in it.The most important is a metaphor from last verse with G and e minor.Tuomas as a musician use musical metaphor, equivalent of whitman's (every moment of dark and light is a miracle), G and e minor are corresponding musical scales, like two two sides of the same coin.Celebration of life and human being with all it's strenght and weakness at the same time. This is what the whole imaginaerum is about ,about joy of life ,open theme park (life) and enjoy the Ride even though there is dark stuff (ghost river, scaretale) there is so many magic moments and our dreams is the most important thing in life.

Once I got over the idea that this wasn't TPATP Part II, I had to concede that this is a bloody good song. The poem gives me chills. The guy at the start has a really good narrative voice. :-)

@Aravis17 according to interviews, the poem is not in the movie :3 And guys, you have to try cutting from 6:54 to Rest Calm, it's the best. I've listened to the two tracks cut that way as a single piece some 220 times.

I just cannot imagine why people don't like the poem. It's the best part! Though I would've liked it to be a track of its own.

For the people who (understandably) can't stand the shitty "poem" bit at the end, here's a copy that's identical to the original until that point, when it switches to the instrumental: The only part that's edited is the spoken word portion. Enjoy~
