The Newsboys are a Christian pop/rock band formed in 1987 in Mooloolaba, Australia (although they soon relocated to Nashville, Tennessee). Its core members, John James and Peter Furler, originally hailed from Australia where they played in a band together called The News.
Newsboys are considered one of the most popular bands in the Christian music industry. They have had numerous hit singles on the Christian pop charts, including
Shine (1994), Take Me To Your Leader (1996) and He Reigns (2003).
In 2000, they helped start and headlined the annual, travelling CCM festival Festival Con Dios with Audio Adrenaline and The O.C. Supertones. It was known for featuring popular Christian bands and its motorcross stunts.
Steve Taylor has produced many of their hit albums, and several of the songs he has worked on with the band (such asBreakfast, Take Me To Your Leader) feature Taylor’s humor and quaint lyrics.
During the Step Up To The Microphone tour, the band featured the drums on a rotating platform that could tilt downward up to 90 degrees. In fact, there were two sets of drums and Peter Furler (the original drummer) and Duncan Phillips would wear seat belts, so they wouldn’t fall out, and have a rotating drum-off. This feature is still used on their tours and has grown to be quite popular.
In 2003, Jody Davis left the band to care for his sick daughter, Bethany. His replacement, bryan olesen, left in 2006 to work on his own band, Casting Pearls. The band announced in January 2007 that Paul Colman would be replacing Bryan.

Saw them on Friday night in Edmonton and didn't really enjoy it at all. I've seen them twice before with Peter fronting, and this time around it didn't even feel like a Newsboys concert. And on top of that it didn't feel like a dc Talk concert either. The best thing about the show was that it was a Christian concert and audience, which was a nice change from the shows that normally come through my hometown.

sportsnut, a lot of people did become fans during the going public era, but even more did during SUTTM, thrive, and the worship albums. all of which had huge tours and he reigns was a hit for how long? the large KLOVE (for lack of better descriptor) demographic they gained there is what I was referring to. both are original members, though, so I'm not arguing that he's not integral. just quite a bit of the current fanbase became fans when it was just peter.

It could have been so great with Jody Davis back but this it just sounds like any other Pop/Rock band now no orginality any longer... And this WAS my face band for 20 years oh man....

I wouldn't say that...John sang on the Not Ashamed, Going Public, and Take Me To Your Leader albums. Not Ashamed was the Newsboys' first commercially successful album, plus he sang on the tour for Take Me To Your Leader, which was a huge tour.

I like tait.loved dc talk, loved hero the rock opera, liked tait the band. I don't know if I like him as a newsboy, but I haven't really liked the newsboys sans tait since thrive so it didn't really affect me. if the songwriting grealy improves with the change, I'm down. but apparently john james is back with the band to give his testimony. so at least more of the original aussia flava is coming back, in a way.

Anyone who is a Dctalk fan has no room to talk...We liked Newsboys before tait because of their sound and their ministry and Peter Furler was the one who gave the Newsboys a particular sound that all newsboys fans enjoy. now that the sound is taken away..we're not sure what to think anymore...yeah Michael Tait has a great voice..but it just doesn't sound right it doesn't fit Newsboys, Newsboys had guys who had wide vocal ranges so they can sing Soprano notes and do Soprano harmony and the Tenor harmony also. That's one of the things I enjoyed the most about Newsboys. Tait on the other hand has a lower voice...and maybe he can harmonize..but he doesn't have the right voice!

Any REAL Newsboys fan knows that there are is only one real Newsboy left anyway and he has decided to do strictly writing for the band. People need to just deal with his decision. No amount of whining will make Peter change his mind any more that it will make dcTalk get back together or Jesus return any sooner. It may surprise a lot of Newsboys "fans" to find out that Peter was not even the original vocalist. He was originally their drummer. True, he will be missed, but so will many who have donned the moniker, "Newsboy."
