Bradford, England (1980 – present)

New Model Army is a modern punk band, more melodic than many of their classic counterparts, and are widely respected for their unwavering political stance and working class ethics.

The band was named after the English revolutionary army of Oliver Cromwell. Led by guitarist / vocalist, Justin Sullivan (who performed under the name Slade The Leveller in the early 1980s) it was formed in 1980 together with drummer Robert Heaton and bassist Stuart Morrow in their hometown of Bradford, England. The group quickly grew an extremely loyal cult following, referred to as “the Family” by members, which to some extent is still extremely loyal.

The band collaborated with electric violinist Ed Alleyne-Johnson, who worked with them on their Top 30 single “Vagabonds”, and their album Thunder And Consolation, as well as touring extensively with them for five years.

The group also tours as ‘Justin Sullivan and Friends’ which means a more acoustic set without some players (which ones varies), and is linked to Red Sky Coven, in which Justin Sullivan also plays. In early 2003, Sullivan released Navigating by the Stars, a solo album recorded with other band members and featuring Danny Thompson on double bass, and Mark Feltham on harmonica.

After a short tour at the end of 2004, the group returned to the studio to record their ninth studio album, Carnival. EMI recently released a couple of remixed earlier albums. As the band themselves say it: “Although there is nothing new within the packages they have been very sympathetically re-packed and remastered and do sound very, very good.”

In 2004 their founding drummer, Robert Heaton, died of pancreatic cancer. Heaton was a key part of the band and formed a formidable song writing partnership with Sullivan.

I have missed their "Weihnachtskonzert" in Cologne yesterday for the first time in about 20 years! Although I had a very good reason for this, it was a very strange kind of evening... Next year, next year then!

In response to the "semi-metal song" comment on the new album, I don't really think that's anything so new for them, especially if you bring to mind older songs like "Master Race" from The Ghost of Cain or "Get Me Out" from Impurity, - just another side to the band they don't often show, but it's fine. New album is the best since impurity for me too I think. Good to hear them, as always!

I've last seen them live after they seperated from the violin guy, must have been around 2000. . A lot of fans turned away after that. It was strange at first because the violin was so present in the old songs (e.g. vagabonds). But I think they have done well these past years.

saw them in Berlin yesterday - good show, little too sinister in the beginning for my taste but with all the great classics as encores

being a fan since the mid-eighties i found out that "eight", "carnival" and "high" are superb records as well, but goc is the first pick for me, followed by i and t&c. strange thing is that i have no opinion about tiagd after listening several times, maybe it needs some more chances, though the title-track is sadly worse!

One of my favorite bands of all-time and are just as fantastic live! So underrated...Justin's lyrics are the best out there! I am very pleased with "Today is a Good Day". I can't wait for the next one already. ^_^

listening to High for the first time, and sure it is no T&C, GoC or I, but it is very listenable. nice to see that they haven't completely lost it!

Agree with the comments that this is the best NMA album since Impurity. Absolutly loved everything up until LOHC (also good, but not as great IMHO as their earlier work). With some albums, for me anyway, something just clicks straight away and one instinctively knows that it is good. This is such an album. Definitely a return to form, long may this continue!

TiaGD is a good album, not the best they ever did (nor did I expect it to be), what baffles me is the title song being chosen as the first single, it's the worst on the album, they sound like a semi-metal band instead of the powerful band they really are... Autumn would be much better as a single, IMHO... but what the fuck do I know? Anyway... good album!

LOVED this band for 20-odd years, never ever tire of listening to them. Saw them live several times in the late 80s, then not at all for several years... until recently when my obsession has returned... 4 gigs lined up for this year - one down so far, three to go!

i love this band so much and yet i hardly listen to them! i binge for a few days and then don't listen to them for months on end... so stupid of me! listening to Thunder and Consolation yesterday made me fondly remember the early 90s when i was completely obsessed with NMA :)

To Me "Today is a good day" is the best NMA record since Impurity. At least it's the hardest and most upbeat record they've done for the last two decades. Favorites so far are States Radio (perfect Wah-Wah at the end) and God save me (Pink Floyd kinda guitars). All in all it reminds me alot of Impurity (in overall atmosphere). Very pleasent surprise... Marshall Gill really adds something powerful and new to their sound.

After The North American Tour 09

26 Oct 2009 | from www.newmodelarmy.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=frontpage

Now the first section of the Today Is A good Day tour is over we'd like to say thanks to all the Americans and Canadians who came to the shows. As usual, it was a whole lot of van miles, but with some really special nights along the way. …
