About This Track

Amoungst the simplest arrangments on the album, just Mangum and his accoustic guitar. A chugging ryhtm accompanied by a voice 100’s of men strong. His wails strain the range of his limited voice, portraying a helpless figure trying to gauge to location of the Two-Headed boy in question, but just who is this Two-Headed boy? Is it the two Peters Anne Frank mentions have become one and the same in her diary, or is it literal, creating images of a circus freek banging on his prison like jar in some deserted laboratory. The lyrics intesify, the singer is helpless, what can he do about the Nazis sadistically running their fingers over Anne and Peter’s spine some 50 years ago. The song portrays a struggle, the last verse providing the end of a resistance. Images of Peter van Dann closing his eyes for the final time under the weight of Nazi terror, and a circus freek running out of oxygen in his jar provide a gut-punching sadness to the song. Mangum’s voice is weary by the end, it seems he can’t comprehend the pain that some people can cause to others.
