Simple, brief and lovely. The pain of Holland, 1945 is interupted by melancholic oscillations urging the strum of Mangum’s guitar. Bearly taking breaths Mangum melancholic voice seems to vividly describe a dream about Anne Frank. “Communist Daughter” is alive with imagry, but can also appear disturbing on the surface. The notion of semen staining the mountain tops can’t be ignored, is Mangum imagining a sexual connection with Anne Frank? He describes Anne masterbating, proving that she must still exist. Before you can even begin to think what it all means, Scott Spillane provides the most simple yet most beautiful horn section of the album to close this all to short song.
