Biography

(1993 – present)

Neptune Towers is an “Avantgarde Astral Alien Synth” side-project formed in 1993 by Fenriz of Darkthrone. Neptune Towers’ stated goal is “To enable the listeners to keep both feet off the ground.” Fenriz credits Klaus Schulze of Tangerine Dream as a big inspiration. In a recent interview, Fenriz also said he was influenced by Kraftwerk which can be heard in the use of elaborate sequencers in Transmissions From Empire Algol. It is characterized by a very slow-paced minimalistic atmosphere.

Neptune Towers was ended after Fenriz finished the third album, Space Labs, because he was dissatisfied with the quality and refused to release it.

New Sterbeklang releases are similar to this project, which I love.

Incredible music. I discovered Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and other awesome artists of old school electronic music thanks to Fenriz. I've only found 3 copy of the second release at Amazon, the prices were set over 200$....

This music is heavily influenced by Tangerine Dream and anyone who's listened to them can easily hear the similarities, but Fenriz also manage to add his own Neptune "touch" to it. I love how the long, sweeping hypnotizing drone synths almost put you in a trance state, but there are also some melodies hidden in there which make an excellent trip... Just remember: The Towers will appear only when your mind is opened. I'll always come back to these two records. Good stuff! :)

Ehm.. Listen to intro's like the one of "Force Majeure". Sure as hell that Fenriz was heavily influenced by Tangerine Dream when it comes to Neptune Towers, at the very least. Of course it's different, since our norwegian hero does'nt like copying other artists. Influences aren't a crime though.

And if people are going to compare them to Tangerine Dream they obviously know nothing about ambient music.

Neptune Towers is amazing. One of the only ambient projects done by a black metal personality that really worked.

Fenriz doesn't agree you people though, he said it sucked and refused to release another album. Seriously give Lacus Somniorum a try, you'll realize what real space music is about.
