Steering from bubbly to witty to romantic to profane, McKay brings new life to the cabaret format, drawing influences from rock and rap. She has released two double albums and one single album. She played Broadway in March 2006 with Alan Cumming and Cyndi Lauper in Threepenny Opera, which ran a limited engagement to mixed reviews and for which she received a Theatre World Award for Oustanding Debut Performance.

:-) hehe, I do get envious of great female vocalists. But then I think of Floor Janssen or Marcela Bovia or Sia Furler or Kate Bush or Regina Spektor. Not Nellie McKay. I can see how this is appreciated for it's quirkiness and cabaret lyrics etc though. But it's not my cup of tea.

I'm referring to the argument below - Nellie McKay's voice is absolutely fine. She has extraordinary albums and songs, and this time, out of all silly stories that we hear about some other artists, she really does bring new life to the cabaret format. Her style is totally refreshing and I personally find her music very original. Her last album is something huge and I think everyone should give it a listen.

I don't see the modesty in selling albums if you can't sing. It implies that you see yourself as an artist. It's not like her music is very complicated or original, it needs good singing to be interesting. But well, taste is personal.
