I don't give a fuck about historical accuracy. This is a SONG! An amazing one at that. It sums up the history as good as you're going to get it.

I couldn't care less about the historical accuracy. All I know is that this song still hits me right in the heart.

i hate when people go off about historical accuracy as if it's the most important thing in music and poetry, especially in pieces like this that comprise obviously personal elements. it's a song, people! zuma doesn't come with a label like "learn all about aztec society!" and as much as neil romanticizes the native society, it's important to remember that history books also barbarize and/or westernize it. he knew a few facts, not enough to make an accurate history lesson, but enough that it affected and inspired him to write this and that's what's important.

Yeah, the overly-romanticized lyrics are not a high point of Young's career, but damn, the guitar work sure is.

@PartySanCTG: To me I guess the question I would have to ask is does this justify their civilization and culture being nearly completely and utterly destroyed for posterity? The Spanish didn't have to do this after conquering them. So you could say Europeans were just as bad, if not worse than the Aztecs at this point in history because they weren't above genocide if they didn't convert to Christianity (i.e. being brought under the absolute control of the Spanish). A (relatively) primitive society with superior technology and fueled by religious zeal and a lust for power and influence is an ugly thing no matter how you look at it.
