Southern Man is a song by Neil Young from his 1970 album After the Gold Rush.

The song’s lyrics focus mainly on racism against blacks in the southern states of the USA.

The song ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ makes reference to this song (and ‘Alabama’ from Neil Young’s later album Harvest) with the lyrics:

Well, I heard Mister Young sing about her
Well, I heard ol’ Neil put her down.
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
a southern man don’t need him around anyhow.

Southern man, better keep your head
Don't forget what your good book said
Southern change's gonna come at last
Now your crosses are burning fast

You have to cut Lynyrd Skynyrd some slack, see the songfacts for Sweet Home Alabama: http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1702 especially "The feud between Lynyrd Skynyrd and Neil Young was always good-natured fun; they were actually big fans of each other. Ronnie Van Zant often wore Neil Young T-shirts on stage and is wearing one on the cover of Street Survivors, the last Skynyrd album before his death."

Nobody seems to appreciate honestly, even Lynyrd Skynyrd, go figure. I'd pick this over Sweet Home, a song that is pretty much a blind celebration of southern pride while ignoring the evil parts of their culture. It's their lack of remorse and conscious that really irks me.

Always reminds me of William Faulkner novels, especially Light in August.
