Coventry, UK born O’Connor fronted the punk rock band The Flys from 1977 to 1980. The band is best recalled for their 1978 song “Love and a Molotov Cocktail”. After leaving the Flys, O’Connor joined his sister Hazel O’Connor’s backing band.
