The capital of Moldova is Chisinau and was one of the centers of musical excellence in the days when the country was part of the Soviet Union. It is now the home to one of the most highly regarded chamber orchestras of the world.
Situated between Romania and the Ukraine, Moldova gained its independence in 1990 from the former USSR.
The conservatory of music in Chisinau is considered amongst the best in eastern Europe today. Moldovans are a very proud and passionate people with a mixture of the Romanians’ Latin temperament and the cultural devotion of the Russians.
In fact, this has contributed a great deal towards their expressive abilities and artistic dedication and combines to form the heart of this most accomplished ensemble.
The chamber orchestra has always had a busy performing schedule and now that it is not confined to touring just within the Soviet bloc countries, it is finding itself in greater demand, most especially since the appointment of J. Crispin Ward as the Principal Conductor and Music Director.
In 2001, he became their Artistic Director as well, a title that had not previously been held by anyone outside of the country.
