Nat Baldwin

The simple combination of Baldwin’s bass and singing is pure, direct, and timeless.

Today, when most of the so-called musical innovators simply offer contemporary takes on already proven and accepted movements in music (neo-psychedelia, nth-wave garage bands…) Portsmouth, New Hampshire’s Nat Baldwin is a true original. Baldwin is an upright bass player and a singer, but he takes both of those things to their limit, and has perfected a sound that he can call entirely his own.

Trained under free jazz master Anthony Braxton, Nat is involved with Dirty Projectors and his song “Only In My Dreams” from his Lights Out CD EP is featured in a new Orange ad (in the UK). It looks like the world is starting to give Mr. Baldwin the attention he deserves.

Honestly, I think Nat is pulling your legs. Someone who can play and sing so beautifully as he does on Lifted could not layer that atrocious modern wankery on top of it and keep a straight face. Unless he's incredibly desperate for artsy backslaps.

The version on the split with Extra Life is at the very least less annoying. I wish he'd redo it without the pointless wankery.

Not sure about this. Lifted is a brilliant song and then it is ruined by some noise. He should not have don this. Is there another version without? I would love to hear his music without all that extra's. Why ruining something brilliant.

The new album sound pretty rough around the edges, he could do with putting some more effort into production. I also still prefer the split version of Lifted, the little bursts of free jazz on the new version sound awful, as do every other bit of aimless experimentation in his material. I think I half-love, half-hate his style.

Met him and drank special Belgian beers with him after a DP gig, few days back. Now checking out his music. And it's amazing.

he may sing "exactly" like longstreth but longstreth sings "exactly" like Arthur Russell his voice and the shit he sings about are different, the feel is different, yeah
