It's as if Nas is looking back on his career (and life) with a touch of sadness from a lavish hotel balcony. His vision over the Queens skyline is unfortunately clouded by a few lingering commercial ambitions however and perhaps he's still not quite sure if he's a thug or a conscious rapper. Life Is Good is decent but it suffers from what I think a lot of Nas' work suffers from - a lack of focus and execution. Still, Nas is such a great rapper that it's easy to overlook the flaws. Just trying to be real here... I'm not picking holes in the album for the sake of it. I think he tried to do too much with Life Is Good. I've pretty much got nothing left to say at this point anyway, so I may as well have vacated the shoutbox permanently after the previous post...

Trying too hard?! I'm so stung. You obviously just don't like what I'm saying and what I'm saying makes sense! Please don't come at me with that try-hard shit - I'm not here begging for co-signs, I'm here to express my opinions! Nas is a fascinating rapper and his work warrants analysis. I never said (or implied) that a hip-hop album required just one cohesive message. What I did say is that an album needs coherence - not contradictions. I also never called Life Is Good a concept album, although Nas inadvertently did that himself on numerous occasions - he compared Life Is Good to Here, My Dear! Quite a hint. Life Is Good is partly (if only it were more clear) structured as a concept album (it falls apart as it's inundated with the horribly calculated Summer On Smash) - coming up from the hood, indulging in money and fame and the many implications of those vices - it's not fourteen tracks of Nas spitting about whatever…

SimonePerrota, you're trying far too hard. Why does a hip-hop album need one cohesive message? Nas had plenty of things to say and said them in the way which resembled his lyrical storytelling prowess of the Illmatic/Stillmatic albums. It's not the concept album you're trying to make it out to be

At times Life Is Good seems almost slavishly designed to appease and put Nas within shooting distance of the charts and commercial relevance (it's not as if this is a new aim but it's painfully evident here). Summer On Smash and The Don (to an extent) are out of place musically and it's hard to see where they really fit in - especially since a large proportion of the album wants to believe it revels in a classy, timeless sound, which it struggles to achieve from the outset. A largely off-form Salaam Remi, with the exception of Cherry Wine, doesn’t help matters at all. If you want a mature Nas with very little pretence nor concessions to radio airplay than I'd direct you to his grossly underrated Street's Disciple - where his priorities as an artist are straight and topical sprawl justified. People are falling for a botched attempt at a career milestone - one that doesn't know whether it's a celebration or pause for reflection. Life Is Good smacks of opportunistic transitional album...

Two things are quite apparent about Life Is Good – it doesn’t court as much widespread controversy as Nas’ last few efforts (even if it has it’s moments) and is, surely by most standards, the most a-typical disc he’s released in a while. What a shame it is then that the album is at odds with itself as a collection and (or) a statement and caught up in its own bombast. Does Nas really think this is the 'Here, My Dear' of 2012?! Almost everything is a contradiction, which makes Life Is Good look calculated rather than necessary.

They’re really not. Life Is Good is decent overall but it's contrived, littered with clichés and not streamlined topically. A lot of the tracks are suffocated by layers of interjecting loops - as if trying too hard to sound fresh and urgent. Lyrically Nas is exceptional but he's caught in two quite different minds thematically. It's hard to deduce whether the album is a nostalgic career retrospective or a dirt-dishing account on his personal struggles and life in the limelight. Some editing and correlation betwen subject matter would have helped but alas...

Not terribly impressed - but it will certainly do and I'll probably grow to like it with subsequent plays. The trio of studio efforts that come before Life Is Good (excluding Distant Relatives) are superior and continuously overlooked...
