Toronto, Canada (2003 – present)

Nadja refers to at least three different bands:

1) Nadja is a Canadian duo featuring multi-instrumentalist Aidan Baker and bassist/vocalist Leah Buckareff. Originally formed in 2003 in Toronto, Canada as a Baker solo project, Buckareff joined in 2005 to bring the project out of the studio and into live settings.

To date, Nadja has released over ten full-length albums, in addition to various EPs, splits, and collaborations with such artists as Atavist, Black Boned Angel, Fear Falls Burning, A Storm of Light, OVO, and Pyramids. Nadja has worked with a variety of labels, including Alien8 Recordings, Important Records, Beta-lactam Ring Records, Crucial Blast, and The End Records.

2) Nadja is a Danish artist with currently only one single in her portfolio - Min Melodi.

3) Nadja was an italian post punk band.

4) Nadja is a Quebecois retro-soul singer who released her self-titled cover album in October 2009.

Saw them live about two hours ago. Because of the roughly seven hundred "not too good live" comments in this shoutbox I didn't let my expectations get too high, but seriously it was pretty damn good even though they only played for about 50min or so. Fair amount of improvisation or "live only" material for sure but as soon as the drums kicked in and the intro transitioned into a version of what I'm pretty sure was Clinodactyl (from Body Cage) the whole thing was sold for me. It's worth noting that the venue wasn't very big; unlike for example Sunn O))), based on interviews and just looking at their setup Nadja relies heavily on the venue's own sound system rather than huge amp stacks of their own, and personally I have no problem with that. Regarding visuals, they have had cool projected effects/video loops in the past, but that might also vary depending on where they're playing. END OF MASSIVE WALL OF TEXT TL;DR: Nadja at a well equipped venue? Go, you probably won't be disappointed.

maybe some fire-breathers or strip-dancers would make it more enjoyable for you?

I can't imagine this being too exciting live. I just imagine them standing there slowly playing their guitars. Kind of like Earth, or maybe Sunn O))) minus the robes and fog. I would think they would need some cool visuals.

Saw them live and it was a little disappointing, but I think that was more the sound system than anything. Sounded like some really heavy compressor was ducking the sound every time they played a note. Going to see them again soon!
