Helsinki, Finland (2004 – present)

myGRAIN, is a modern metal band from Helsinki, Finland. They are currently signed to Spinefarm Records. They have released four studio albums.

myGRAIN saw daylight in the summer of 2004, as Tommy (vocals), Resistor (guitar) and Matthew (guitar) were standing in the ruins of their former band, New Science Band. The guys had been playing together since 1999 and their collaboration still worked well, so they decided to start a new band with this lineup. The main idea from the beginning was to play rough metal with melodies. DJ Locomotive (drums) and Eve (synths) soon joined the band’s lineup. Jonas handled the bass for the two self-financed demo CDs and after recording the second one, The Red Frame, in April 2005 he permanently joined the band. A few weeks after the recordings, Spinefarm contacted myGRAIN and they inked a deal. The first fruit of the collaboration was the debut album “Orbit Dance”, released in April 2006.

The debut album, introduced the world a modern metal band with Nordic/American melodic death metal influences and lyric subject matter unlike anyone else’s. First and foremost, a live band definitely worth admission on stages small and large alike, MyGrain first focused on domestic touring but while still on the road, managed to forge another slew of songs for the February 2008 release of their 2nd album “Signs of Existence”.

The songs and entity of the album are great on PB, but it doesnt remove the fact that the instruments and vocals sound horrible. Everything is covered by general noise, which sadly makes the music sound a lot more dull than it really is. You cant even notice the bassdrums without focusing, with the exception of Ghost in Me (Which is one of the best songs on the record). Especially when you compare PB to the self-titled, where every instrument have their own clear and intense sound and you can feel the music and get excited right away. In PB you need to concentrate on listening all the time, and its really hard to get any special vibe from it. Currently every time I start listening PB, everything i can feel is the disappointment of what it could have been with better mixing and mastering - which is really sad because it would still be quite a good album.

The new album is good but not as great as the self titled album. I feel the only song that reaches the level of your best songs on the self titled album is Rats In The Cradle. That said there really is no weak song on the album. Feels like slightly easier to get and more enjoyable version of Signs Of Existence. To be honest I kind of expected you guys to push it to the next level and offer some things completely new and mind blowing. Despite the criticism I still think it's a good album and I bought it today. Other fave songs: Ambivalentine, Dreamscape, Ghost In Me and Mechanimal Instinct.
