My grey horse

Stratford Upon Avon, England (2009 – present)

With their layered four-part harmonies, swirling surf guitars and sweeping melodies, my grey horse are not easily slotted into conventional music categories. Many have casually drawn comparisons to The Shins, Grandaddy, and “the folk-pop scene of the ’60s”, but all agree that they’re hard to place. Hailing from Stratford-Upon-Avon, the five-piece formed in 2009 and immediately began converting themselves from a cappella and acoustic, into a live, working act. They’re a band of brothers or, more accurately, a band with brothers – three to be exact. Peter, John, and Oobah Butler are joined by friends Tom Mott and Joe Nicklin to complete the band’s line-up.

BBC6 & Fresh on the Net’s Tom Robinson, Jace Lasek of Jagjaguwar’s The Besnard Lakes, Gill Mills’ of Amazing Radio, and Glastonbury Festival Judge ‘The Devil Makes The Best Tuna’ have all hailed their songs, the latter referring to them as “alt-pop so smart it could ace a mensa test”.

In mid-2011 the band signed to CRC Music Group, an independent record label based in London. Founded in 2009 by Charlie Larby and Al Mobbs. Their freshmen release came in February 2012, when the band ousted ‘The Marley Banks’ EP – with a launch party at the famous Troubadour venue in Earl’s Court, London.

The band contains an illustrator, an animator, a writer, and a film-maker. ‘Waste of Air’ was featured on numerous online blogs including New Music Matters, Pigeons and Planes, Listen Before You Buy and Eclectically Challenged, whilst BBC Introducing’s David Gilyeat included the song in his top 5 tracks of the year.
