(2011 – present)

My Tricksy Spirit is a musical project which fuses the sounds of a Balinese “Gamelan” instrument called the “Gender Wayang” with dub reggae, electronic, ambient, trip-hop, psychedelic and other styles of dance and rock music.

The project consists of Nick Gray (a lecturer in Ethnomusicology) who plays the gender, violin and provides lead vocals on some tracks and is the lyricist, Charlie Cawood who plays bass guitar & guitar and Joe Chapman who plays drums, is the lead vocalist on some tracks and is the recording engineer and producer.

Gray and Chapman had been playing in bands together for many years including in the psychedelic rock band Spiral 25 but they first started recording for this project at Chapman’s upstairs room studio in 2010. The project was named “My Tricksy Spirit” by a poet friend called Sam Willetts in 2011. The name comes from a line in Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”.

Joe Chapman is also the singer and bass guitarist with psychedelic drone rock duo The Neon Violets whose first gig also featured Nick Gray on violin and Sam Willetts reading poetry.

My Tricksy Spirit’s first track “Free Of Stars” was released on 21st December 2011.
