New Orleans, Louisiana, United States (2003 – present)

Mutemath is an band which formed in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States in 2003. They consist of Paul Meany (vocals, keytar, keyboards, samples), Greg Hill (guitar, vocals), Roy Mitchell-Cárdenas (bass, percussion) and Roy Darren King (drums, samples). Meany, King and Mitchell-Cardenas are former members of Earthsuit.

The band is best known for their 2007 single “Typical”, taken from their 2006 self titled album. The song’s innovative “backwards” video was nominated for a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video. The song also peaked at #33 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.

Early in the band’s career, they were marketed as a Christian Rock band by Warner Brothers Records (who owned their label Teleprompt), who distributed their “Reset EP” on the Christian label Word Records and sent the singles “Peculiar People” and “Control” to Christian rock radio. Teleprompt ordered the singles pulled from Christian radio because the group never planned to pursue that market and intended to be marketed to secular alternative radio. The songs were pulled from Christian radio, but not before “Peculiar People” became a minor hit on Christian Adult Contemporary radio and “Control” won a Dove Award for Best Modern Rock Song (which they did not accept). Teleprompt also filed a lawsuit for breach of contract to Warner Brothers Records, which was dropped shortly before the release of their debut full length.

The members of MUTEMATH had reached their breaking point.
