So, I promised
I would get back to you on that Maria Mena
record. Dutily having listened to it on my living room hi-fi(ish) setup, I have to say that my misgivings about the production weren't totally unfounded. Even though some songs flirt with more adventurous soundscapes, Apparently Unaffected
basically sounds like a polished, AOR/MOR, session-musician love-in. But it wasn't as distracting on a better soundsystem than it seemed on my tape deck. Maria's songs and effervescent demeanour really shine through the dullness of the production, making this a good record, despite the best (worst?) efforts of her assembly line producing team. I'm looking forward to her next record, and crossing my fingers that she'll hook up with someone willing to step the production up to the level of the singing and songwriting.
