Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions – Beat It on Down the Line
Biography
Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions was a folk/bluegrass band made up of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, Tom Stone, Dave Parker, and Michael Garbett. Jerry, Bob, and Ron broke off in ‘65 to form “The Warlocks,” which soon became “The Grateful Dead.”
The only surviving recording of Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions is a single live performance at The Tangent in Palo Alto in 1964. After having been lost for several decades, the tape was found in an attic, and released on CD in 1999. It contains an interview with the band, which is stunning to hear in light of their yet-in-the-future success as The Grateful Dead.
